Empowering Mali Through AI

Bridging the linguistic divide with community-driven artificial intelligence solutions.

The MALIBA-AI Initiative

MALIBA-AI is a community-driven AI initiative with a name derived from Mali Ba (Great Mali) and AI (Artificial Intelligence). It is an initiative set in motion with a simple but strong objective: solve problems using artificial intelligence in Mali while ensuring no Malian is left behind by technological advances.

A country like Mali is missing out on all of the advantages that comes with AI adoption. The primary barrier is language - most Malians don't speak French or English, the languages that dominate today's AI interfaces.

Linguistic Inclusion

Developing AI systems that understand and speak Malian languages like Bambara, Fulfulde, and Songhay.

Community-Driven

A collaborative effort by enthusiasts, engineers, linguists, and researchers passionate about Mali's future.

Open Source

All projects are open-source with permissive licenses to ensure wide accessibility and community ownership.

Our Philosophy

MALIBA-AI follows the same model as most open-source projects. We take a community-driven R&D approach in our works. Any of the projects published under MALIBA-AI will not be for-profit.

This initiative has come to life as a passion project, hence it ought to be worked on with that mindset. A passionate collective looking to make an actual change with their skillsets, ensuring that no Malian is left behind by technological advances.

Objective

To have documentation on all projects describing if they will work for Mali and how to implement them as quickly as possible.

Approach

Community research projects going through trial and error, hypotheses, and experiments in a collaborative manner.

Fields of Interest

Our work focuses on three key areas to bridge the technological gap in Mali

Language Models

Developing foundation models specifically trained for Malian languages, creating neural machine translation systems connecting Mali's diverse linguistic landscape.

Bambara Fulfulde Songhay

Speech Technologies

Speech recognition and synthesis systems provide an interface that is natural and accessible for all Malians, regardless of literacy level or formal education.

ASR TTS NLP

Accessibility Solutions

Developing solutions on top of our AI models that address local problems with interfaces designed for users with varying levels of technical literacy.
