Every time you post this ..I am mesmerized.. Such a lovely creation of nature. I want to grow it
Which greens have you sown
Oh.. I removed a few. | |
Later, I observed that its fruiting in suckers.
Please elaborate. Also, Is 3G method required
No. Too much work for cleaning and de-seeding it before it can be used.
It is already processed, deskinned, deseeded and defibered
As in the left side. | |
Just as much you can grasp in your palm. If it has stopped growing further, you can leave it for a week more to mature and then harvest.
Right time now. Very easy to grow.
Even in Tomato, it will flower in suckers. It is more of resource, time and space mgmt.
Even in brinjal suckers can be removed when you are clear of how to shape the plant.
Ivy gourd is tondekaayi?
Most of those I have in my seed catalogue + few new ones.
When is tamarind expected. I can collect the seeds with it
How about melons.. All these musk varieties.
I observe no more growth. But they are still small
Sir , how do you manage mosquito menace with water pond..
A week to 10 days | |
Harvest when you can smell the fragrance of the fruit.
Hi, I need flowering seeds, how do I get it....
Okay then 1 kg for me.... Along with some seeds like 1 packet each of....
* kasuri methi ( not the regular methi)
I have morning glory, marigold and shankapushpam seeds. Actually small plants itself
Lovely. I would like to have marigolds . How can I pick it up?
Let me know when you plan to come. Early morning is best. Othewise too hot on the terrace
Guppies in the pond they will not leave any mosquito eggs. That's their food!
Which is the right time to sow turmeric and ginger?
Very healthy. Have you provided trelly support?
I am planning something like this using pigeon net on my terrace as a trellis for passion fruit and for other climbers.
Very nice. Was thinking in the same lines
But my personal opinion using this for passion plant..
Passion fruit climber grows wild and strong. It can even bend away thick branches.
So please keep us posted
Usually we drop a thread from a height for the climbers.
But with this, we are trying to figure out how to keep it at 3 ft height as per your multi layer idea. We dont have the vertical poles to create horizontal trellies.
That would look great! | |
In my balcony, passion fruit vine from ground has already spread on the grill giving a similar appeal.
It has place to spread only on the right side.
You need to provide vertical poles and provide horizontal wires or ropes. Otherwise they will start cluttering on the ground and become vulnerable to pests. Cucumbers lying on the ground will start rotting where it rests on the ground
Yes. Have allocated some area to develop a package of practice for soiless medium cultivation. All veggies and greens are being grown in grow bags and soilless potting mix.
Can they pick the thread support, reach the trelly top and spread like gourds?
Yes, they can. But they are short vines compared to bottle gourd and others. So, they will try to establish as much possible on the vertical trelly.
What about pumpkin s if they are on the ground
Likewise Ash gourd, water melon and the like.
They need to be close to the ground level. A low level mesh will help in managing the spread or you can simply let them on the ground.
Some arrangement to place fruits above the soil is helpful to avoid them from rotting.
1) Creepers & Crawlers | |
Mostly on the ground, also sometimes crawl on large trees when sunlight at ground level is not adequate
Eg. Pumpkin, Ashgourd, melons etc
Eg. Cucumbers and beans
Elevate first and then spread, typically on other trees in the nature
Eg. Varieties of gourds.
These are general guideline. There are always exceptions
KK sir, when possible April sowing calendar... or is it pretty much same as March?
Yes, pretty much. Add zucchini
Thank you sir. Zucchini, I am so tempted to try looking at all the pics..Till which month it can be sown? I need to acquire seeds..
You have to sow now to harvest until rainy season begins.
They start rotting with excess water.
Learnt this from masterclass today..chilli ,tomato plants leaf curling. Downwards.
No pests. Soil seems moist ..but when dug in slight palpable heat. Temperature soaring..
Under watering it is...most probably. Ruling this out first.. sitting in AC didn't realize what my plants were going through. Feeling bad
Seeds available with us.
Is it possible to share the calendar for the newbies in group?
*By end of this month, i will provide the procedure, we can all start together planting around 10th Mar.
Is it OK to use Coconut coir that we remove from coconut as it is as mulch? Should they be cut into small pieces and/or washed?
Cut them to 1" pcs and use. No washing needed
That's interesting. Pl change my zucchini order to 3no. in place of 1 no.
Time to harvest: 10 months
From sir's part 1 of ginger and turmeric growing.
My passion fruit. Had trimmed completely, coming back again beautifully
Sorry, I seem to have missed something. What is "sir's part 2 of ginger and turmeric growing"?
I'll send you all the parts in the PM ma'am.
I think it is about time I encroach into my neighbour empty plot.
My neighbor may not be so lenient..... Let me first build my terrace garden
Yeah, not everyone can understand.
Beautiful. Is this in a container?
Lovely. How old is it? | |
I have harvested lettuce a couple times recently. Even though I harvested when leaves were soft and plant hadn't grown tall, leaves were bitter.
Searching on web suggested due to heat and or lack of nutrients. It is not latter for sure. Wondering you had any other thoughts
Lettuce isn't suitable to grow above 25C ambient tempr.
It is a winter crop. Leaves will get bitter sooner and will bolt early.
Yep, that's exactly what is happening.. thank you for confirmation
Best is to follow seasonality.
Else you need to use technology to create suitable conditions suitable for the plant.
20 ltr paint bucket | |
Brought recently Six months ago
Lovely! Never seen such healthy one! this is rekindling my interest in this plant.
What is it? Ridge gourd?
Tamil also Chukku keerai
Unpollinated fruit is the ovary.
Logically, I can compare that with the microgreens.
Basic doubt: can a fruit first of all develop with out pollination? Can there be unpollinated fruit at all?
Definition of fruit includes fertilisation. But if I remove the flower bud from the zucchini I showed, we would call it a fruit ( rather vegetable) but it is an ovary.
I want chuckle soppy where I will get?
I had just got a few seeds to try. Now I will get in bulk.
Will update when it is available.
I was enquiring about the taste n texture of this harvest
Never heard of it! What plant is it?
O.. Ok. The shape is so different
Thad is sour soppu normally Andhra people eat as dal &chatney
No gongura is different
Are leaves of all melon varities edible? I know pumpkin leaves are.. what abt muskmelon?
Pumpkin flowers are also edible
Please let us know how to use the leaves n flowers
You can make Bajji in flowers
We used this recipe. | |
It seems like it has yellow mosaic virus infection. It gets the name from leaves discoloration.
What to do for that | |
One month old plant | |
It doesn't flower within 1 month from sowing. It is older.
No remedy for viral infection. First Quarantine the plant.
You may chose to grow it as it is flowering well. Prune severely affected leaves. Nurture the plsnt so that it gets the strength to withstand the infection.
There is a risk of the infection to spread by touching other plants with hand or tools after this plant.
Aphids are the most likely carriers (vectors) of the virus.
Ok thanks gor your advice sir
You mean the dark green spots on leaves indicate virus?
No, the yellow patches and the yellowing of the veins
Please highlight in the image and send
I need to highlight the entire plant!
Will do some Googling. | |
Shall i transfer this into another pot
Is that i have to remove the other flowering plant
Feb 10th i repotted the pots
I had put seeds around end of feb
Now that has grown almost 12inch
All my plants suffer from this. Ivy gourd is a severe case
I prune Ivy completely. Everytime it revives back
How do we know when to harvest a yellow pumpkin
When it stops growing in size. Leave it for another week on the vine to improve shelf life.
You mean not edible? Looks hot though
How long does it take | |
And should close it and keep it in a bag or container
Or can be left aerated | |
We used to call it gubbacchhi gida in Kannada. Whats its English name.? Ornamental plant.
" Everyday should be Earth Day celebrations for us, not just restricting to 1 day in a year"
Lovely. Hope to see the same in my garden
That is now the most valuable food!!
Do you have a forest? Wow!!
Pumpkins? Love their bright yellow.
Did someone post how to use these as food?
just waiting for that tamarind so that we can visit your amazing garden
These are ash gourd flowers.
If there is a recipe, most welcome!
The recipe in the link talks of pumpkin flowers. I guess it is the same with ash gourd.
Will ask him to share | |
Is it dragon fruit tree?
Here rain pouring like any thing..from 1/2 hour..
Very heavy rain in central bangalore
It's in malayalam..we do it in native ..very tasty..pls try..
First time.. can't wait to see it fully grown
Amaranthus varieties sleeping due to rain
A starter package of planters setup yesterday at one of our group members.
So, when Amaranthus sleep ! Due to rains ,do you harvest them early ? Will they stand up with more sun ?
Just help them by gently shaking them up to clear wster on them. They will come back up quickly.
I harvested only those that were ready. A quarter of what was sown.
Just keep looking at those .
Ok. Probably (?) because my soil was very porous they didn't spring back ..
You need to take a call based on actual situation on hand.
Yes..my Potting mix needs adjusting . A bit more soil is required for the roots to firm up is what I think
Is it on terrace ? | |
Can imagine that satisfaction of devouring them
Super sir lovely colour
Even i too sir | |
How old is the gourd? When will you harvest?
I am not sure when to harvest
The gourds must be 3 weeks old
Is it still growing? | |
Ours usually stops by 6th day
Observe daily growth of the goutd in length and girth. Harvest when it stops growing.
Wow! That's a huge fellow!!
Ready to harvest in during the week (55 days from sowing)
Dont wait hoping it will grow bigger. Harvest between 55 - 60 days
Can we eat beet root leaves ?
I use tender leaves in salads..
My tulsi plant leaf is showing de-colourisation on two leaves. Is it a sign of nutrient deficiency??
Is it magnesium deficiency requiring epsom salt spray and liquid nutrition? (Others can also confirm)
Btw we got v good results with raw rice washed water for tulsi
Ohh ok thanks. will try the raw rice water tip also.
Always had a doubt does magnesium salt effect earthworms. Since all my pots have earthworms in them. Request guidance KK sir.
No problem for earthworms
When the plant has all resources, it will establish itself well first so that it can bear well later.
Just released a video on youtube
Weekly twice , I clean residual milk sticking to vessel ,
with little water & pour for tulasi. Good result. Actually we used to add 1 TS of fresh milk everyday to slightly grown plant.
I too heard about raw rice water
We can try this also | |
It doesn't appear to be cercospora leaf spots
Plantix said "silvering", not sure if that's true
Is it anthracnose disease.. hope not
It is due to some sap sucking pest.
Observe for beetles movement in the area
Thank you for your excellent sessions on Gardening.
It was very informative and you covered all the points pertaining to Home Gardening in a very appropriate way.
Your Passion towards Gardening was reflecting in both your Sessions of Theory and Practice.
I have gained substantial knowledge from you and will certainly apply for Gardening.
Thank you ! I will setup some glue traps and hope it catches some of them
Glue trap would not collect beetles. But still setting it up may help if the pest was not beetle.
How many plants do we need atleast to get 1/2 kg bindi
To harvest 1/2 kg at a time, anout 10-12 plants
20 plants of big variety bhindi will deliver half kg per week for sure. I had small bhindi, 12 plants it gave me 250gms/ week in its best time. Others please comment.
Approx. 45-50 okras for 500g
4 okras per plant (if yielding well) would be about 12 plants.
20 plants are more practical as we cannot be sure if all plants yield the same.
Thats a lot of plants. How do you people manage with space constraints
Okra is not a urban gardening friendly plant. French beans is relatively better
First of all, i struggle to grow okra, secondly, need a lot of plants. Hence we decided not to grow that vegetable.
I grow only to learn about the plant.
Please guide me when to harvest and how to get the seeds
Our first okra harvest was very good. Failed in second and 3rs attempts. Main problem being early flowering and plant just refused to grow beyond one foot.
Sowed seeds again yesterday as fourth attempt with different soil composition this time.
It is mainly about soil dynamics.
I think okra growth also depends on climate. In mumbai okra being grown on railway tracks without much efforts.
In Bangalore, many gardeners find it very easy to grow okra any time of the year!
I have no luck with methi. Am using QL seeds. Tried with other seeds. Soaked overnight and sown. It just doesn't come up. I have something like wood lice in great numbers in the soil. Do they eat up methi seeds alone? All other seeds germinate ..
I have been successful with methi I buy from grocery stores for cooking.
I also find methi difficult to grow on a continuous basis. Main issue is the damping off at seedling stage. This makes me wonder how much pesticides would be used on store bought methi leaves.
I normally soak it overnight and pot directly into the container.
Hmm will try it next time.
Leafminer, not to worry.
Monitor if the yellow patches increase over time.
There is already a flower and many buds at the lowest nodes. Can it sustain the fruit so early
If you provide more compost and Jivamrut, it will develop more foliage and vines before flowering.
Ok. Will follow. Thank you
Good garden set up | |
Is it balcony or terrace? Does it have the water overflow mechanism?
Water overflow control mechanism?
KK sir, please answer the above questions about the picture shared...
It is on the terrace. | |
It has both automated irrigation and AQUASAVE system.
Is it a covered terrace?
Partially covered. Raised beds are placed where there is enough sunlight.
Is it in a container or ground
How old this plant | |
In container... grafted plant, its been 1.5 yrs since we planted.
It is in our tree planter!
Parakeet feasting on Mango left over by Monkey in my house
Spells health and hope.
What a sight ! Prized catch .
How is Jeevaghanamruth used for plants?
Yes! Preventive is easier! Let's grow our food for a healthier life and lifestyle
And bees!!! How can we forget them
But even you people enjoy its taste
Mix it in the soil and water. About 50g per por or sqft.
We are also making GhanaPanchahavya - Panchagavya in granular form blended with neem powder and pongemia cake.
An excellent nitrogen rich fertilizer with pest and desease resistant properties, rich in microbes and wide variety of micro nutrients.
It is also used as tea to reduce blood pressure.
So while adding in food, should be aware of dosage
Very nice! This will be in a dry form then?
Yes. Makes it suitable for shipping out as well. Panchagavya shipmeny by courier isn't quite easy given its explosive nature as it forms gas due to shaking.
I am making juice and drinking
Sir, can I keep this as my dp
When will this be ready sir?
About 5kg is available.
Can be used in all plants isnt it sir including my flowering plants?
Sprinkled once a week? | |
I would like some. Enough for one round of my entire terrace garden
For weekly application, first mix it in water in 1:20 to 30 ratio (adjust based on your experience) and ferment for 2 days.
You will get liquid panchagavya!
If you apply with a mug, then water your plants undiluted.
To apply in water can, filter and use.
In granular for apply once in 2 weeks or once a month depending on the growth phase and demand of the plant.
For Eg.: You can apply in powder form once a month, other 3 weeks in liquid form.
You would need 2kg for entire terrace garden
So 2 kg for me sir | |
Also as a drink | |
Lovely! Will you hand pollinate every one of them sir?
I had shared a video link recently on this. Have you seen that?
Yes!! So you'll leave the job completely to the bees?
I try to enable bees and not to do their job.
Varies by individual practices and experiences.
Sir I would like to order for 1 kg is it available??
Please share your observations. I could not track my trials
Do you have seeds of this?
What is the issue sir | |
Mites infestation - Neem or SasyaRakshak spray
Calcium deficiency - Dolomite
Did you know that tomatoes respond to a high C note? And more... https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/apr/24/the-strange-amazing-stories-behind-six-everyday-plants
Watch smithsonian channel. A lot of such experiments are well documented in videos.
Looks like early stage leaf rust disease. Apply Mycodim.
Prune all affected leaves and branches and burn.
Apply neem spray to the plant.
After light shower thus evening, i was very curious to see how my garden looks at night aftee the rain.
It is prettier than ever!
No rain here in shanti nagar
You are the proud father of these babies
A lot happens while they are asleep!
Did you know that vegetables develop at night?
The change is dramatic in gourds. Once the fruit sets, measure the size at 7am, 7pm, 10pm and then next day 7am. The growth between 10pm to 7am is incredible!
Goodness!! Such lovely coriander!!
Do you put coriander seeds in whole or. Break it?
Whole. Either ways it works.
Ok to be in the soil | |
Shade drying after washing the leaves. Then dehtdrating in microwave
I do the same with mint. What do you use so much Italian basil for? Except Italian cuisine?
Awesome! Getting inspired with the heerekais in the group.
Can you share the experience. How long did it take to fruit
Pic is not clear | |
Sir this are very small insects white in colour. So not able to get a clear picture
For 1.5 yrs it should have formed a dense cluster of plants.
Fitst question to ask; why is it standing alone stunted in growth (unless it is a dwarf variety)
I also saw this insect on my lemon tree. Don't know if it was feeding on leaves or the white insects
There 4 smaller pups around it
Its around 6 feet under the foliage (I can stand under it comfortably)
Not sure of the variety | |
Was planted by my Gardner
Must be pacha baLe? | |
Hold your papm behind as background. Then you csn focus better
Google for the images of spiders and mites and check which one match with the pest
Looks like it has been dormant for a long time.
Normally in 8-9 months they grow over 10ft.
How many hrs of sunlight is it getting?
This is the second time were harvesting ridge gourd
After the first set it completely stopped flowering. Again after a month it started flowering and fruiting
Its in my backyard | |
But lots of shade from surrounding trees
Can I remove the pups and transplant them elsewhere at this stage
Sorry to bombard you with so many questions
Nice. So a longer experience. Any observation will be helpful... Time it took to grow, fruit, yield, pests..
Yes, they need direct sunlight and lots of water.
Nevertheless, it looks amazing!!
New raised beds to grow immunity developing food and avoid corona bed!
Please put up a video and share in YouTube also sir
Some more things are to be completed, will do after that.
Not yet. In a couple of days i will be completing that.
Sir what is the % shade that's suitable for blr? Do you have it available? And is there a standard size or can we share measurements?
50% is suitable and is available with me.
It comes in standard width and running length. I can cut to your size.
50% Shade net price: 8.4/- per sqft.
This is my first experience with snails. I wouldn't have noticed it if not for the masterclass
KK, I have these small snails in my vermicompost bin . How do I get rid of them ?
So of there is less water they will not come or die?
They breed on marshy areas. If you maintain proper moistire in the soil suitable for plants and in the composting bin optimal for composting, then you will not have them as infestation.
In the masteeclass, of you remember i explained how to check if the moisture is right during the practicals on making potting mix
Its super easy to grow wheatgrass.
I have created a grow media that makes it even easier to grow!
Some of the group members have indeed grown with my grow media
In fact, it can be dehydrated and stored or transported. No nutrients lost!
Nice and healthy looking
How do you ensure they don't get spots.. mine start out being healthy but then wear off
Here is an example | |
The soil should be continuously nourished.
I do foliar spray of panchagavya and one other liquid nutrution every week.
Rain is also helping | |
Due to a pest, most likely thrips.
Neem oil spray will help.
This is super easy. | |
With your next order, I will send some microgreen grow media. Any food container or small tray can be used and grow on windowsil or on top of the fridge or on your desk.
I would love to try sir | |
Need help KK. The zucchinis are growing well initially. But after they grow to the size of about 6 inches the edges start to rot. There is lot of water at the end.
What could be the reason?
Excess water in the soil. They are very sensitive to overwatering. They drink a lot and start to rot!
Ok, I will try foliar spray of panchgavya
KK sir need help on using the pump and also want your micro green growth media.
Will I be able to use they clay mugs for micro green using the growth media you have mentioned
Sir, I do aneroberic bokashi composting with only soil layering and without any water. So far to mix with soil I buy Compost on bulk from outside. Water retention in pots is an issue I am yet to sort out. Even after adding cocopeat, sand, the soil I get is very pasty and soggy. I am yet to try the potting composition I learned from master class
For microgreens you need a shallow container. In these mugs you can grow radish or carrots.
These kind of containers or trays. Just about 1.5 inch depth is suffecient.
In 1sqft grow area, you can grow about 80-100g of wheatgrass.
You can make up to 10 glasses of health drink i showed earlier!
Did you consume it? | |
1) Mix dry or semi decomposed leaves and garden waste in to the soil (50%) that you use to layer the bokashi pickle.
2) Instead of buying compost, reuse the output of bokashi compost itself back in to the layering process 2 - 3 times. It will become enriched and well textured.
3) use the above output as compost in the potting mix recipe taught.
Mustard from my terrace
Yes. We did. One time we mixed it water and second time with Ginger and Lemon. It turned out very well.
You can also grow edible aloevera. I have the saplings.
A great addition to make health drinks.
Even bees are trapped? | |
Hey splendid.. I want to try these that we usually don't wash before using.
Share the images of this journey if you have please
I need a sapling of edible aloe vera.
Super.... This is an amazing group .... Is there anything that the group has not grown?...
You might not have noticed in the catalog
I pulled out the plant. Dint take any pics
It is a very laborious process to document.
Unexpected events make planning difficult and spontaneous reponse to an event in the garden steals the moment and its gone! Later you realize that you should have clicked it!!
Be in the present! Enjoy!
Kk sir, have you written any articles on growing and maintaining lemon and pomegranate? Poms are growing in bunch while lemon plant has no growth
It near impossible to distinguish for laynen like us. Experts too will be careful in their assessments as many variants are poisonous.
Not yet on fruits. | |
What is the difference between normal and edible alovera
What is the reason behind smaller size and less harvest sir
Super .... Good to c this. Not do easy
KK, I see some issue with my tomato plants..the leaves are becoming like this and i see some black substance.. maybe a pest? Also the bottom of fruit is becoming like rotten. What needs to be done?
Bottom end rot. Calcium deficiency. Sir can confirm.
Yes, Ca def. Blossom End Rot (BER)
For leaves, SasyaRakshak or neem oil spray.
In my experience this typically happens when a) leaves are watered instead of soil and b) Not enough circulation for tomato plant
Circulation is a good point..In my set up they are quite close to each other.. watering is through drip
Indeed. Last week used all the time to complete terrace setup.
Today was on a sowing spree.
In spite of pheromone trap and bagging, fruit fly found an opportunity to damage the very first fruit set.
In all, 8 ash gourds are growing from two plants. Thanks to the large concrete raiser bed. It has enough rooting soil volume to support development of all ash gourds
Super arrangement kk sir
What is this liquid sir | |
Our brinjal has just set.
Hello KK, what's this pipe here for? I have been missing to ask this since long
When the level of the soil goes down after a couple of years, i insert this ring around the trunk of the fruit tree.
Then i can top up the soil to grow greens without submerging the trunk. Submerged portion may rot otherwise.
I had indeed explained it earlier already.
Can this be done now? I mean inserting the pipe? For my exsisting trees?
Take 4" or 6" pvc pipe about 6-8" long depending on how deep the soil is (distance from soil surface to lip of the container + 10mm)
Make a cut along the length using hack saw
Open the cut end wide enough to pass the trunk in to the ring
Centralize the trunk to the ring and press the ring in to the soil be 5-10mm to position it firmly.
Then fill potting mix to the rest of the container for sowing shallow rooted veggies
Do not fill anything inside the ring. Not even mulch. Let it be clear for ventilation.
Thanks for clarifying repeatedly
Thank you sir. Will try.
Some pics from the garden planted just about 3 weeks ago. The kids are having a great time watching them grow. Thanks @918310145449
Wow, Congratulations on your first harvest!
Fresh food as medicine | |
Real nutrition for better immunity
Super different variety plants
Sir.....edible amaranthus has completely invaded my mother's garden. It gives a very bountiful yield.
Should we remove it because it would prevent other plants from giving a good harvest or should we just enjoy the random wild growth?
Purely your choice of what would you like to eat!
So it would hinder growth of other plants sir?
Depends on container size abd your nutrition mgmt.
Ok sir, we'll remove it in the smaller containers then. Thank you!
What i do is, when they ate 6 - 8 " tall, harvest them. I do not let them overgrow the main crop but harvest when they are at their tenderest best.
So many water apples!! They look delicious!!
Are are the fallen ones ripened or rotten?
Neither. They r raw. Also I dont c any insect in the fruit.
Was that due to rains? Or the pic. from today?
How old is the tree? | |
Csn you also share the pic. of foliage?
Same thing happened with our star fruits. All the set fruits fell apart, of same size as in this pic
There are several reasons:
1. Not enough water | |
2. Not enough nutrition
3. Pest or desease problem
4. Too many fruits set that the plant cannot handle
5. Carbohydrate deficiency due to inadequate photosynthesis (less foliage in proportion to fruits set or persistent cloudy weather or masking coating on leaves etc.)
Use this as checklist and zero in on the most likely reason in your context
Pallavi had zeroed on (1) i.e. less water n had started watering.. have to wait n see for next set of fruits
This checklist is applicable to any plant with fruits/veggies falling off prematurely
Looks like its too much for the plany yo bear
How much ever v nourish one rain makes a lot of difference.
Very sweet n crunchy. | |
Yes.. and slight overwatering from our side and plant goes for a toss.. whereas whole night if it rains, the plant is super fresh next morning.. I think it's because atmospheric nitrogen is carried by rainwater..
Is this any special kind aloevera plant? How is this different from the aloevera we get in other nurseries.
I have a lot of aloevera plants which I have had for several years. How do I check if this is an edible variety? Or if can use it on my skin?
Can you pl show me a picture of the whole plant with it's container? I have one in a decent pot but it keeps breaking & flopping over.
Nature's gift.. Love it
Of the 300 and odd aloe varieties, only 7 or 8 varieties are edible. Only experts can make out the difference.
I have two edible varieties.
Yes, rain water is infused with nitrogen as the oxides of nitrogen in the atmoshere reacts with water to form nitric acid. Hence, rain water is acidic. Likewise it also gets enriched with other elements as it cuts through the atmosphere and falls on the soil.
Does this happen in continuous rain? Or in the first few showers?
There will be dynamic changes depending on geospatial conditions. By and large that is the phenomena.
Dr. Sundaresh is serving at The Sai hospital. This is a helping hand to all of us.
In any unfortunate covid event for any of us (wish not), we can count on him and the hospital.
Thanks to Dr. Sundaresh and team!
Thanks a lot Dr. Sundaresh
Many thanks to Dr.Sundaresh
Tks to Dr. I am helping covid patients to near & dear .
Kk sir do you have ICE APPLE sapling
It's also called as NUNGU
Ih, never heard about it!
Oh, this is o kannada Thati ningu. Very popular in blore during summer.
Any idea where do we get this sapling
How do we avoid black ants to Guava and Sapota tree
Fungal infection - leaf blight or diwney mildew. Summer heat and i termittent rains makes the plants vulnerable for deseases.
Never checked about it.
We have discussed enough about ants control. Pl. Search for it in the message thread.
You could try with nurseries around big banyan tree, off mysore road.
Sir , in the catalog there are two items amla and gooseberry.. which is the big one vs the tiny ones
Amla is the big one. | |
Any reference for naturally ripen mango sellers (direct) please?
Do you harvest it from the roots or just snip the branches?
Hope at least you get to enjoy it.
How long do you wait for harvest?
Late aadre balitu hogattalva?
4 weeks from sowing and before it starts flowering.
KK had answered a similar issue I faced, this must be due to calcium deficiency. Add dolomite
But with only one flower, there is no chsnce even with bees.
I know. There are many buds yet to open.
This is a male flower i guess
Yummy. What did you do to the leaves?
Sir i have found that if you grow the flower cosmos it attracts plenty of bees .which in turn helps pollinate the veg flowers
Where can I get the seeds?
Latest harvest... Red amaranthus, Goni soppu, pumpkin leaves, dried turmeric leaves (for the herbal tea)
Kk, the Amaranth is green on top with purple underside, which variety is this from ur seed catalog
That's the whole idea! To keep up the motivation and optimism. Supporting each other with challenges and celebrating successes together!
Immediately prune all affected vines/leaves and burn it or dispose away from garden. Otherwise it will spread to other parts of the plant and other gourds as well.
Wash your hand and the tool after clearing infested part, before attending other plants.
Whiteflies is one of the vectors (carriers if the virus) If they are present, control them.
I also see that younger leaves are the most affected
And is this similar to ir same as yellow mosaic?
Looks like gourds are a challenge. Mine is climbing up
Look at the opportunity we have to grow pur own food!
With covid, living itself has become a challenge.
By a keen observer and be open to learn from your garden, from the plants. They will tell you everuthing about them and you!
Use the learnings actively to continuously improve. Then you will realize, it is such a wonderful opportunity to develop ourselves both in body and mind!
Yes, the group itself is a big classroom.
And, the plant has 6-7 gourds growing. Anything i can do to help them
People in the group working in corporates or owning their own businesses will understand -
Defining the problem statement properly is already 50% solution.
I would not even call it a problem statement but "Purpose statement"
Just by changing the title, you can make the problem vanish! When there is no problem, there is no need to struggle to find a solution.
Now there is purpose, just pursue it!
Yes! Gardening is not only about plants. It's about life's lessons!
What do you prepare from this
Super green and healthy also
You can make thambuli | |
@saranya, this is not the brahmi, but from the same family.
Sorry to dissappoint you.
We make vallarai chutney!
Black gram dhal, red chilli, garlic, vallarai leaves(mint and coriander added is also an option), amla. Saut and grind!
Kk but I heard this is also one variety of Brahmi
so green..its very good medicine for brain..just add it raw with chutney..
Edible ? I think I have similar one!!
Is it!! I just started a teeny weeny plant. I too thought it was Brahmi/ ondelagada soppu???
This is called ondelaga soppu..not brahmi..but it has similar properties like brahmi..
It is from the same family, but not the one with medicinal properties.
There are non edible varieties too on the same family
That is another confusion prevailing!
Ondelaga is commonly known as Brahmi.
There is another plant that grows in marshes or in water and is callrd jala btahmi to distinguish between the two.
Sorry for the typos | |
I | |
Pyramid will have flowering plants all around.
I use nutrimix once a month then panchagavya alternate week.
Its a succulent . Not to be eaten
These are called Kodi Sampangi in Tamil. Google tells me it's Telosma or Tonkin Jasmine....
Very rare to see this creeper(?) Nowadays. Has a subtle fragrance .
Would love a seed, sapling if possible @919941483839
I think it propagates through a cutting. My mum started it off with a stem cutting.
Will try to see if it puts forth leaves.
Any tips on when to harvest carrot. My carrot plant started sprouting on may20th.
3.5 months from sowing.
I need that red passion fruit plant also
I faced the same thing in my tree as well!! But it became alright on its own!!
I didn't bother to know why!! Coz grown up trees somehow will get back to normal!!
But it's good to know why!!! If someone in this group is aware of it!!
My friend just sent me a pic of a dragon fruit farm near Nelamangala. Thought of sharing in this group
Maybe because it doesnt need much water and returns are good
Ya also in demand | |
I see lot of these in the compost. Are these white grubs going to be problem to my plants.. the one that eats roots?
They are not grubs....it is a maggot. A grub would look like below.
Thank you. So the compost is ok to use with them in it?
Yes. Maggots don't harm, humans, plants or animals
IMaggots invariably occur when the pile is very wet. You could just add a lot of browns, give it a churn and wait for a couple of days.
These maggots sometimes escape from my composting container. Lots of birds (mynas, I think) feast on them. So it is not a problem.
It becomes a problem if the composting is done inside the house and they escape. It happened in my friend's apartment many times, and they have now given up composting.
This is not a grub | |
Also not BSF maggot | |
It is the larva of a fly. | |
Mother of all problem to invite any of these worms is excess moisture in the composting bin.
Which ever method you are following, follow the process and dosage prescribed by the vendor diligently for a trouble free composting experience.
Will be starting sowing now.
I want this flower is it indoor plant?
Almost ready. We sowed and transplanted today on the pyramid side.
Does the thondaikai creeper need more sunlinght?
Right now due to 3xvess moisture in the soil due to rains, tondekai vines will start rotting. That is normal.
It needs morning Sun for sbout 6hrs
Super big size!! Brinjal also!!
So this picture has lemon and Guavas also!!
I pruned it completely last week
Nothing like home grown thondekai ,so tender, cooks in minutes . Tastes delicious even raw . Enjoy !
Follow it after the rains, i mean inbetween rains. Less qty. and more frequently.
If you observe rain takes turns between day and night as a pattern. Align with it.
You can zoom this image to see msny greens seeds germinating.
Plants are in a hurry! | |
Fruit trees on the periphery planted sir?
Yes. Planted. Dripline pending
Haven't seen any attacks this time..but have been spraying neem oil and sasya rakshak regularly..
Once in 15 days? | |
Don't you have pheromone trap?
Will also try neem oil spray
I dont have n I lost my only gourd
Yes it is passion fruit | |
First bunch of grapes | |
Is this genuine kk sir? | |
I Don't reccomend reuse as it is prone for fungal growth.
This makes for a very good layering medium in composting.
Snow-white (basket) and tge seven palaks!
I have them. I got this from gujarat and it has a blackish leaf stem. We make tasty steamed masala rolls from the leaves called "patra". I can share a few bulbs. I'll post pictures of it in my garden tomorrow.
The soil looks so lovely sir!! It has settled so beautifully and evenly
Since we already have two cats, rats, squirrels and pigeons stay away from our garden.
RWH pipes are doubling up as passion trellies.
It'll be nice to see the harvest ma'am
Can peas shells go into compost?
Yes! We put even peanut shells and pista shells. It just take more cycles to compost
One of my favorite plants
Have u tasted the ripened hagala? Supposed to be slightly sweetish and can be used raw for salad or mosarubajji
Haven't tasted raw, but we use along with regular bitter gourds
We are going to lose over 3366 trees between Silk Board and Bangalore Airport for a metro rail project. We have time until July 4th 2021 to send in our objections. Lets not lose trees that are over 100 years old. Send your objections now: {{LINK}} https://act.jhatkaa.org/campaigns/save-trees-from-silk-board-to-bangalore-airport?utm_campaign=WyR8bUejX3&utm_medium=whatsapp&utm_source=share
Wow nice vegetables and dalimbe
Am surprised strawberry is yielding one or two this season..
Is that methi or curry leaves?
Nice variety!! Fruits. Vegetables. Flowers!!
I came across this beautiful article about the sacredness of tree....so I thought of sending this to all lovers of trees.
Very nice!! Do share a photo of how the trellis looks - laden with beans!!
What a beauty! Soon to be harvested right?
This should give you an idea how your garden area can look like with verticsl planters
Yes was mulling over it | |
I am in RRNagar. My address / ph- no are given below.
No: 24, 3rd floor, P.J.Nehru Rd. 3rd stage, BEML layout, RRNagar, B'lore 560098

Please welcome Mother & Son duo - Dr. Saraswathi & Dr. Gaurang.
They are super committed to grow and feed chemical free food for their family in their Eagleton home.
Also sharing pictures of the completed Urban farm!
Welcome to the gardening group Dr.Saraswathi and Dr.Gaurang! This is Saranya here!
Multilayer Microfarm after 3 weeks from start.
Lush and will soon become delicious!! The plants have grown so well!! The blades of grass are weeds sir?
Yes, that is the biggest challenge. Every week most of Hanumanthu's gardening time goes in weeding. By persistence, we are sure to tame it in a season.
2nd week, we saw aphids on beans vines. By weekly application of neem oil, yday the garden had no pests.
But wild amaranthus greens leaves had eggs of mealy bugs.
We harvested some but was rejected due to those white spots (eggs). We weeded out all of them too.
Is the red tuber sweet potato?
New chemical in the market .
Makes leaves fresh with in second s.
Yeah saw it couple of days back...
What is this they are adding Sir? How to know what we buy is reliable
Can salt and turmeric negate the chemicals or what should be done. Please enlighten us so that we can educate our families and friends
I already received this video few days ago. But the chemical used is not mentionef and hence its toxicity level is not known.
There is no practival way you can remove chemical accumulated in the commercially food we eat.
It is relatively easy for us in the group!
Increase the qty/variety in your garden and become self reliant. Motivate your friends and relatives too to start their food garden.
Soaking in salt water helps in getting rid of pests sticking to the harvest.
Turmeric helps in clearing parhogens.
But not the chemicals absorbed by the plant.
Chemical water is not good they do it for sale as K K sir mentioned salt termeric water is good
Looking at the messages in this group on silicon based surfactants, I sought inputs from Mr. Soumik Banerjee who is one of best known experts in the field of agro-ecology and has been working with the farmers of Jharkhand on natural farming for decades. This is what he had to say -
"They are not good, These chemicals amplify effects of chemicals in the environment; they are toxic to aquatic life. They contain Dioxane as an impurity; a very dangerous substance. Dioxane is carcinogenic and known to affect Liver, Kidney, Brain & Lungs."
"Silicone compounds are pervasive in the environment. Particular silicone compounds, cyclic siloxanes D4 and D5, are air and water pollutants and have shown negative health effects on test animals. California health officials have expressed concern about this growth in use of D5, saying in 2007 that it has potential public health impacts and has been measured in several aquatic species at parts per million concentrations, and appears to have a long half-life in humans. Thus, D5 persistence in the environment and in animal and human tissues is a concern.
Received this in an other group pertaining to the video
You mean this is the chemical in the subject video?
That is a very useful share, thank you!
The more we read and see such things, all the more convincing it is that food gardening has high positive impact on our wellbeing and lot more easier than we think!
I guess you go the answer for your question and concern.
Awesome! I had the privilege of witnessing this and her beautiful garden today.
My association with her and Dilip (her husband) dates back to 1993 when i joined their company addon. That was my first job!
Since then hey have been supporting and inspiring me to do more and do better.
I couldnt agree more. A humble and beautiful heart person
Good morning everyone, thanks kk sir for adding us to the group
Very glad you took some time amidst your busy schedule.
I hope the content in the group will be valuable in the food gardening journey you both have embarked!
Welcome to the group | |
It was super tasty! | |
We used 8 leaves for 4 people. Hope to have received good dosage of iron.
Nice. V call it pudi patrode as the leaves r chopped
It is the caterpillar of a moth or butterfly.
Hand pick the visible ones and apply neem spray thoroughly to the infested plants
Finally a proper explanation of how the greens become fresh after immersing.
In the widely cirulated video of vegetables becoming fresh after dipping, everyone has been very curious to know- what is that? how did they do that?
Well the product claimed in this video contains
Polyalkyleneoxide modified heptamethyltrisiloxane 80.00%
Polyalkyleneoxide modified heptamethyltrisiloxane- is an organic silicone surfactant with super ability of spreading. It reduces surface tension of water.
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a polyether compound which is hydrophilic in nature. It works by retaining water.
PEG in high concentration might induce stress-as it holds on to the water and it becomes unavailable for cells to use.
In short its harmful to health. A business trick to sell fresh looking veggies.
Bioprime Agrisolutions Pvt Ltd
Never seen one like that
True It looked like one alien only
Hi group, rainy season observations..
1. no yield and low growth rate of new saplings in
Tomatoes, Chilies, brinjals (flowers falling off),
Cucumber, Squash, Zucchini, Bhindi
2. Bush Beans, Chow Chow -yielding
3. Greens like basale - slow growth
My tending to garden also has dipped wrt providing nutrition.
Share your observations please
Thank you for sharing and all the best
My talk starts at 7:30pm
All the best sir | |
Never seen such insect | |
Beautiful, but do you know what was it's work the whole day?
This is what little knowledge I have
It quite natural to assume such a beautiful creature to be gentle and nice!
But...after my rotary talk!
Main job of adult butterflies and moths are mating and LAYING EGGS!
If you enjoyed butterflies visiting your garden, get ready for infestation of caterpillars in a couple of weeks time!!
They didnt entertain you for nothing! They were breeding in your garden!!
But, its not all that bad. After butterfly phase, frequently apy pest spray in your garden so that not many eggs hatch or caterpillars survive. But then, in the next cycle, less butterflies will visit your garden.
If anybody interested in DIY preparations may find this useful.
Except Kivamrut and Panchagavya, i have not tried anything else mentioned in the booklet.
During my farming training had used Bijamrut.
So, i may not be able to answer all your questions.
Ratios and proportions in the recipies are meant for farming. You need to scale them diwn to your needs.
Click on the book in this page, it takes you to the digital book in the e library for free diwnload and read.
Have grown in the soil bought from KK Sir
Yes, commonly wild Amaranthus coming out of compost. Edible. Has good fragrance too.
What are is this leaves called in Banglore, I wanted them but not getting near where I stay
Lovely! When is it ready for harvesting sir?
8 to 10 weeks after flowering.
Ok thank you sir! | |
So.. I guess, the new bed for the next cycle
Yeah the foetus is seen | |

Buy glycerine and apply on it 4 times a day
You have it with you already malathi. Remember the basale saplings you gave me? Do tambooli and eat with rice for a couple of days for lunch and dinner. You wont even remember you had ulcers
My husband has the same issue. Raw coconut helps. The leaves of manathakkali keerai (Google tells me it's sunberry) also help. I think in the long run changing sleep patterns help
Chew tender coconut shell chips without coconut cream..its little bitter but swallow the juice and spit the shell chips ..granny's nuska..
Chewing raw basale leaves helps
My mother has the same issue
Chewing Dry coconut n khus khus (gasa gase in kannada) also helps
Gargling coconut milk 3-4 times helps. Also chewing kopra helps
Yes I meant kopra n khus khys
My usual remedy is to fill yout mouth with gulkand (genuine one) and keep in your mouth without swallowing as long as you can. Then swallow or spit depending on your allowance of sweet intake.
A couple of times in a day reduces ulcers snd heals eventually.
Glycerene helps as well.
Chewing few coriander seeds couple of times a day helps to cure as well as prevent for me
Mouth ulcers r due to heat in the stomach ajwain leaves Tomboli will help drink lot of buttermilk with jeera pdr
Natures art due atmospheric temp. and humidity variations. Sudden changes in these parameters in opposite directions cause thr skin to become rigid at places where stretching and cotracting happen frequently.
Super . Abundance from nature and nurture
This physiological reaction is called Zippering. Typicalls occurs during fruit set.
For keeping squirrels, pigeons and to some extent monkeys away from your garden
Mealy bugs. Remedies have been extensively discussed before.
Very nice model, as it has planters in it
Majjige huli vangibath hagala gojju tomato Saaru nimbe paanaka. Mattinnenu Beku? Swargakke kicchhu hacchenda sarvagna!
Looks like weekend is going to be delicious
Thank you all for your concern and suggestion. With so many well wishers, I am sure my mouth ulcers will disappear rapidly.keeping my fingers crossed.
Hello KK, Can you please share the location would like to join if it's happening today
We are not working today. Will resume tomorrow
Sahasradala padmam, means a thousand petalled lotus bloomed at Vazhappalli mahadev temple in kerala.lt will remain there for still 2 days.
Last view for everyone to fill your hearts.
I hope he retains at least some plants in the periphery
He wants to sell so want to keep the view clear.
Please try your best to avoid clearing just for sale.
Can we all think of signing a memorandum..
Its a private property. I am happy atleast he allowed me to grow all these years when other plot owners didnt even do that. I will ofcourse appeal to him and try to talk him out of his decision when we meet during the week.
Very sad to clear all the plants kk
So beautiful garden so sad it is clearing away
Video of Eagleton garden after 3 weeks in this link.
This week Friday or Saturday we will be visiting the garden for finishing work.
If anyone interested in visiting the garden may join.
Please share more pics. or videos when convenient.
Any questions may also be posted here.
Hi, sorry, both of us had an emergency so we had to get back to Bangalore yesterday,
Well post them tomorrow morning.
No problem. Just when convenient.
The plant seems to have been infected with Powdery mildew.
Amazing. This surprises me sure. Fruits in such small pot
Amazing. Which variety of Pom is this?
How do we know that pomegranates are ready for harvest?
Me too!! And that too so many fruits!!
Wow. In such a small pot | |
Good morning sir! You'd suggested growing period for potato as Nov to Jan.... Will this be applicable for us in chennai also? Average temp may be around 30 and it may rain occasionally.
Should be suitable. During foliar growth phase, they benefit from ocassional rains.
Alright thank you sir!!
It's starting to have the QL touch!! A preliminary to the actual treat!!
When did you take these snaps
The clients are awestuck seeing you all joining hands.
Its truly inspiring to those around to breakfree from loads of baggage they carry.
Your presence today and Kavitha's yesterday was wonderful.
KK, Its a great pleasure to work with you both..wish I couldve been of more help..keep us posted with the garden updates.
Krishna Kumar added ~Nandini Sripad
@919972445032 welcome to our support group. Here we all can learn food gardening together.
Welcome Nandhini ma'am!! We learn together in this group!! Pictures of harvests are heartening and a treat to the eyes!!
Tap the fruits with your finger nails. If it makes metallic sound, it is ready to hatvest
"Tan tan" - harvest | |
"Dab dab" - wait | |
Wow, will the work continue over weekend
Sir is this a moth caterpillar?
Ok thank you sir | |
It was nice to meet you today.
Your kids are the stars of the day!
We want to finish tomorrow. At the most Friday morning.
Not yet ..if it is yellow variety, it will turn yellow and if it is red variety, it will turn red.
Thanks much. Generally, how much time does it take to change its color once ot reaches its full size ?
Wow! Looks so ripe | |
Couple of weeks... depends on climate, if lot of sunlight is there, it will turn fast
Any reason for having uprooted ginger
You can. But in a couple of days, it will turn complete yellow and light weight.. and drop off.
Will not make much diff.. May be slightly sweeter.
I guess it's a bit early.. but wanted to do some thinning. Not sure if I can sow it back in a different container
Yeah.. You can I think | |
This is what i was visualizing when i was overseeing the garden from the balcony after setup!!!
Thanks Sir...trying our best
Show us the container please
Thanks All for encouragement.
It's on ground.... here is aerial view of it's spread -
How did you maintain the plant? Mine started dying after giving some fruits
We have also gone through roller coaster rides of success-failure...
Main learning gs so far.... aeration of soil and
Water management and seed quality ....
We should not judge the soil from its top but how is it 6 to inch down...it should be powdery and not lumpy/soggy ...
To take care of that we have started doing upside down of soil very often
*6 to 8 inches down | |
And now, we have become little more disciplined and regular in doing neem spray proactively and providing nutrients to plant...
Once a week of neem spray once in 2 weeks of fertilizer
Thank you very much | |
Wont turning the soul effect the roots?
Aggressive soil prep before sowing... less aggressive as plant grow ... few inches down within 6 inches of radius
wow, this is amazing | |
Mind it! That is from only one plant!!
This garden is Krishna Sir's brain child .
I and Roopa too were discussing the same. 1 year very soon!!
Looks so neat sir!! Is this wider than your usual width of the lines?
Next week most likely tuesday, we will be taking up sowing of seeds.
I have created a template for managing the SOW - GROW - HARVEST phases. Will be using it in this garden.
If anyone is interested to learn the tool may join us on that day.
I see some earth worms as well. I have questions. 1. Should I give some more time to compost? 2. I believe these worms are good, so would they become of the pot mix?
3. Can we empty out (half) the bokashi layering bin and refill it with more
Few more days it will be completely done
The first garden with the triangle meditation space....
Yes, Eagleton. 4 weeks magic!
It is Mountain spinach!
Hold your breadth, coz i am going to share the pictures of a piece of Eagleton that is growingbso well!...
In fact am tempted to shift from my current location and get a garden done like this from KK
Bokashi is in sunlight is it ok to keep it like that?
Yes, tomorrow confirmed will be there around 10:30am.
how many months from sow to harvest ?
Nice.. mine is two months old.. waiting
This is repitition last time I got this and sowed the root again now I have got now again I sowed it back hope it will grow
You are doing awesome work KK
Suggested by my friend Harish, an avid terrace gardener.....
" I want to suggest and name a healthy nutrition concept, which I am trying to promote in our appartment complex and Mysore. It is nothing new, but probably more structured.
Micro greens different types raised from dry peas, radish seeds, methi seeds, channa, moong, mustard, wheat in small trays, lettuce different types grown in bigger containers and harvested will form part of daily dose.
Under weekly dose, you can have drumstick leaves, Basale, mint, bramhi, Amruthaballi, doddapatre etc..
Under monthly dose, bone setter, Agase,Gongura, etc..
Depending upon personal preferences, items can be shifted within the daily/Weekly/monthly groups.
This will work very well in apartment complexes, with little bit of planning, each individual producing a particular item. Particularly for micro greens, very small trays without drain holes and even without medium, even in Balcony space, they can be effectively grown on a continuous basis.
Try it out! " | |
Our beloved Harish Mysore. One of the pioneers in terrace garden. He had a huge and dense terrace garden while in Bangalore. He then moved to Mysoure and revolutionized urban community food farming in a large plot!!
Let there be more!! | |
A very fulfilling experience!
That too when you discover the client is actually your childhood friend and batchmate in primary school!!
Hearty thank you @919901644101
That is the epitome of health and nutrition in vegetables when grown naturally/organically
In love with this design!

What's the white flowers in it
What's the white flowers in it?
Slice/squish the tomatoes. Add thinly sliced onions, garlic, pepper, salt, basil, equal amounts of vinegar n olive oil, lemon juice. Mix n keep it for 3-4 days in the fridge so tht tomatoes marinated well. Then its ready to eat.
Thank you...will try it.
Yes kk sir and saranya | |
I got one kg thondekai | |
Thondekai fry , andhra pachadi , sari & try biriyani
It is on the ground | |
Wow wow wow- bumper harvests
What is the box in center which is covered?
Brilliant space management sir!!!
Lovely competition with thondekai
Nice. How will u use it? | |
We just freeze fresh juice. It stays for months. No need yo make squash.
First i will share it with friends and relatives
Then I will make squash | |
Thanks for the suggestion
Even I make squash n freeze some fresh ones. I use it to make mango passion fruit smoothie n also to make passion fruit cheesecake.
Wow! Sounds so yum!! | |
Wow. On your terrace? Can you pl show a picture of the entire tree and the container? How large is the container? Could you also put up a picture of your ivy gourd showing the entire set up including the trellis?
Good morning urban gardeners!!
Such lovely pods!! Looks very healthy!!
Can we freeze in glass bottles
Depends on the bottle quality. We have few spices glass bottle stored in freezer.
Can you share the recipe please
*Black GoldMiner* with _Vertical Garden_
It is a fingal infection. SprY Mycodim
Is that coriander that you've harvested ma'am?
Also, fungal infection similar to the turmeric we saw. Common in this season. Mycodim.
Ok thank you sir! | |
During my last visit, i have explained and demonstrated about;
1) Gourds pruning (ridge gourd, bitter gourd etc.)
2) Sucker management in Tomato plants
3) Pollination in gourds
4) Timely harvest of greens and storing method in the fridge
5) Application of bokashi leachate every 5 days
6) Weekly Neem oil spray
Please ensure all these are followed without fail for robust growth and abundant harvests.
Very happy to see all tomato plants properly tied with trelly rope and trained.
With correct sucker mgmt, pest mgmt and nutrient feed, they will do great!
Sir.... could you please share guidelines to store greens in the fridge?
Sir, I see that there are many fungicides being sold in market . Trichoderma , saaf etc.. is one better or safer or stronger than others..is it that mycodim is organic so we prefer? Just asking for better understanding
Anything organic is in context and can be tried.
Trichoderma Viride is a soil microbe that can help in suppression of pathogenic fungus.
Mycodim is a similar formulation and is organic. The substrate is CuSO4 which is a chemical as Cu neutralizes the pathogens through biochemical reactions. Most fungicides chemical or organic use the same.
I dont know about Saaf. | |
What cannot be expected from me is review/opinion/assessment of products available in the market.
We will be transforming this space next week in to a kitchen garden, herbs garden, flower garden and lawn.
This is in Mantri courtyard near my place.
@919739744417 it is P3 #140
I've already visualised the outcome!! All the best sir!!
Sketch of the garden. | |
This is like using knife to cut the vegetable or to kill.
I have asked the expert who has developed Mycodim for his response on the concern.
Microfarm at @918861001308 after 3 weeks.
We added more pots today. Observe the AQUASAVE feature implemented for them.
Happy Independence Day to all
Long live independent India! Let urban farming be the order of the century!!
Did extensive research and learning regarding the effects of CuSO4 in organic practice.
For anyone wanting to study deeper can refer to this research paper from Europe.
I will be making a brief summary for the rest shortly.
Neem oil + soap spray has helped me. But had to spray often almost daily for few days until they are gone..
Herbs garden bed completed today.
Congrats K Keep it up | |
I said only K that is why | |
Home grown food planner -
Oh, wow!!! That is the bench mark!
We are all together definitely getting there.
Wow congratulations! You are totally self sustained!!
If he allows, we can visit his garden as a group. It is amazing and there can be loads of learning!
Sir, its all yours and you need not ask for it.
Plz do let me know when all of you are coming.
Let me know who all would be interested in such group learning activity. Based on the interest, we shall plan.
@919845810650 you may be interested.
Actually gardens of all group members are Paatashaala for us. They are all unique in their own way.
Am interested if its nxt week
We would love to host all of you. Plz plan and do let us know.
Which area is this? | |
It's Gunjur , Near Whitefield
Do you seedless guava saling that can be grown in a 18"x 18" grow bag. Cost pl.
Try andhra green tomato dal
A very good (somewhat technical) article about Vit D synthesis pathway.
A very important consideration further substantiating the benefit of outdoor food garden under the Sun to stay healthy, naturally!
Cabbage and passion fruit
Wow!! Lovely uniform growth!! Says a lot about the soil!!
What plants are planned here?
25% of the space of food garden for regular veggies
The rest is lawn. | |
Ok. I am eager to see how you allot the space for the veggies
It is becoming an adult!
Once further growth stops, harvest it.
Unbelievable! Cant wait to see the final outcome
Looks so neat and ready for growing!!!
Most part of this space will be lawn
Amazing garden and harvests for the festival!!!
Wow!!! What a complete transformation!! Looks fantastic!!
Complete and wholesome as always!!!
But I water only once in a week..
Looks so pleasing to the eye
May be it is exposed to direct rain. You have to figure it out.
Sure Sir.. thank you | |
Wow!! Another urban farm has thus evolved!!!
Is that your home sir! I see the betal leaves mela!!
Variety of greens without the actual greens!!!
Yes, i have the same question. Why are you solarizing it? It doesn't look too moist.
He provides great tips on diet among many others.
Here is a guideline for smoothie. It can help us to decide what to grow in our gardens!!
Is it? How do we sieve it if it's moist?
Good diet and garden package
Which is the climber? | |
Does each planter has one variety?
Bottle gourd, cucumber, beans and ridge gourd
And beet, radish.. What else
@918861001308 can provide the details. It is his garden.
We have tomatoes, Spinach and Dil leaves as well :)
We are very happy to such progress with the micro farm. Never expected such progress. Thanks to @918310145449 Ji for suggesting this and make such awesome product
@918861001308 so very heartening!!!
Thank you for giving the opportunity!
Recommended width of the bed:
4ft when both sides are accessible. If it is > 4ft it becomes difficult to work at the center.
2ft if one side is accessible.
For companion planting you may refer to the chart shared earlier.
Provide another walkway at the center of thr large bed
Sow Togarikai either on the westside bed or northside of each bed.
Had referred to prepare the list. No clashes as such.
Togari.. Is N or W suggested for full sunlight?
Will try a center walkway. Was thinking to provide a narrow path every 3 feet.
Was it with Bokashi? | |
I am having difficulty growing tonde kai. It is in the container. Plant comes up very nicely at first, flowers also and then slowly all leaves starts drying up. Saw 3 cycles of it....any pointers how get this going well?
Even in my house leaves starts drying up
Again new leaves coming up
Tondekai camnot sustain excess water in the soil.
Vasuki, by now is instrumental in stopping atleast few hundred tonnes (i may be very pessimistic!) of kitchen waste from going to landfills or spread as city filth. He has a wide portfolio of aerobic composting solutions for homes and communities.
Listening to him and other stalwarts in this insta live will definitely be very inspiring and motivating.
Do you track how many cumulative tonnes saved through your solutions?
Look at those ridge gourds!!! They look awesome!! Great harvest!!
No. As I don't take up end to end waste management, it is difficult to keep track.
I wish I could | |
Wow! This is from one pot?
You could make an estimate based on the total capacity of all the composting eqiipment you have installed both home and community and make a pessimistic assessment as a factor (Ex. 0.8 of total capacity installed)
Thay gives you a fair range of positive contribution.
I made this calculation for the ongoing project. Sharing it here as it might be useful.
Similarly calculation for drip irrigation too can be made...when it is called for.
_Total lawn area in Backyard ~ 600sqft_
= 600 x 1/12 cuft | |
= 50 x 28.3 lt (1cuft = 28.3lt.)
Sprinkler flow rate @ 18ft dia (max. range)
Span @ 360 = 840 lph (lt per hr)
No. of sprinklers = 5 | |
Considering a span of 180 and range of 15ft per sprinkler:
Actual flow rate per sprinkler
= 50% span at 70% range x max. Flow rate
= 35% of max. Flow rate | |
= .35 x 840 lph | |
5 sprinklers will release
5 x 300 = 1500 lt. water in 1 hr.
I.e. weekly thrice for 20 min. each
One 12 inch pot + 3 bottles
Need some time to analyse
What is this greens | |
Whats the ideal potting mix
Potting Mix is also called Grow Media or simply Soil.
A good soil for growing vegetables in containers and raised beds should be loamy - Not too hard, not to loose, well draining yet holding good moisture levels and allowing air circulation within the soil.
It should be rich in macro and micro nutrients trapped in organic matter (humus) and managed by a team of beneficial microorganisms (biofertilizers).
There should be both "Ready to Eat" as well as "Slow Release" reserve food for the plants in the soil.
Here is the recipe for such a combination of good quality potting mix.
d) Nutritional supplements (Ex. Plant Nutrimix)
2) Proportions by weight
d - 50g per 1' pot or sqft | |
Or 1kg for 200kg of the mix in 1)
e - 25g per 1' pot or sqft | |
Or 1kg for 400kg of the mix in 1)
Ingredient a) should essentially be from diverse sources - VC, Bokashi compost, aerobic compost, leaf compost etc. And it could be made out of Cowdung, sheep and goat manure, garden/farmyard waste, kitchen waste etc. Preferably a balanced mix of all these inputs are preferred to provide the plants with a broad nutritional base.
Ingredients b) & c) are collectively termed as "Medium" and their proportions are
Radish, greens, bush beans, avarakai is doing well.
The Brinjal, bhindi, bitter gourd, chillies have not sprouted at all . We had unexpected rains soon after sowing.. probably washed away ,blown away.
Planning to grow in a sapling tray.and transplant . Do we need sunlight for seed germination ? Basic doubt ..as I have always grown streight in the pot... excuse my ignorance
This brinjal plant is yielding very well KK.seeds from you.
I also faced a similar issue. Google for curling disease and check
Cant get blown away, but coukd have got washed away depending on how heavy the rain was.
Up to germination they don't need light but immideately after germination, they need. Any delay will weaken the plant.
It is due to damping off disease caused by a fungus. Prolonged cool and damp conditions stimulate growth of thus fungus on soil surface.
Reduce amount /frequency of watering. No reactive remedy.
After harvesting, loosen the soil and let it fallow for a few days to get solarized before sowing next round.
Leaf curl could be due to sap sucking pests like aphids/ mealy bugs etc or due to persistently dry soil conditions.
Potassium deficiency could be a reasonbas the curled up leaves are turning pske yellow.
Give a genwrous dose of compost, hydrate well, mulch and inspect of pests.
Welcome, soil should turn blackish brown over time. That is an indication of improving organic matter content and humus development.
You need to increase compost dosage as well as practice mulching.
It's on the label itself...2tbsp per plant once a month. Or more based on plant size.
Also explained in the product catalog.
Which is this bean? | |
Once a set of beans are harvested, do we prune it? Does it flower again?
From my past experience, I have harvested double beans at least 2-3 time.
Aphids and ants are together in this.
If you don't control ants, you have invited aphids!
How to find out when radish is ready to harvest?
About 6 weeks from sowing irrespective of the size. One indication is the radish starts projecting upwards. Beyond 6 weeks, it will quickly start turning hard and fibrous as well as with exces heat will start bolting (flowering)
And, by the way, if it starts flowering you could let is form seed pods which when harvested tender will taste just like the root.
Does brinjal need hand pollination ? Lot of flowering as of now
I have never done. | |
In brinjal, Tomato, chilli (and plants in this family) dust pollination or wind pollination is thd main reason for fruit setting than the pollinators.
Just move your hand gently over these plants to shake them up which will release super tiny pollens in the air which will increase the chances tremendously.
U can make sambar or rasam with the tender pods. Very tasty..
Also I have this feeling, understanding that flowers that are inverted typically like in tomatoes, chillies, brinjal it is nature's way of saying they are self polinating so the downward bent of flowers ..just my thinking aloud..
Our strawberries are also fruiting. Do we supplement at this stage?
Yes. Compost mixed with nutrimix
Used discarded fencing frames as trellis. we dug up the soil and placed them. Supported with stones from the other side and tied ropes to the wall to frame for the creepers once they outgrow the frame trellis and as a support to the trellis.
I too have it | |
Two years ago i got one fruit
It was very tasty | |
It has flowered and "fruited" real fast!!
Extreme watering practice. Either too much or too dry. Lack if enough sunlight
What's should I do now sir
Are theses plants dead now
Can the plants recover from this
Yes. Feed compost for growth.
First produce of Radish and some coriander harvested today
Radish seeds from KK and coriander from the kitchen
I was there when it was harvested. The carrots are much bigger than they seem to be in the bowl!
Tomatoes look so healthy
Thanks it is baby tomotoes
very nice.. ripened on the plant itself ... that is the secret.
Do we need to support zucchini plant? Please share pics
The perfect Papaya.. very nice
So good. Please share a pic of the plant
Not needed. It is a ground cover.
The yellow fruits are lemons sir?
Sir what is wrong with this cucumber?
Oh. What do i do sir? | |
Can you show how the papaya was planted
I generally cover the pollinated gourd with either a plastic or paper cover or better still with a piece of cloth.
Bagging, glue trap and pheromone trap all help in reducing fruit fly damage. Best is to use them in combination.
We have discussed this often times and all details are provided in the catalog link.
Sowed on Jan 7 th . Exactly a month
In this group we discuss all about composting and food gardening and hope you find the interactions here inspiring and motivating to do more in your garden.
Good luck and all the best sir
This is the rhinoceros beetle.
You might be familiar with the white grub in the soil. This is the adult version of it!
Devours plants, a foe. | |
Ah yes sir.... there were a few grubs also! Will remove them!
Can put a photo of the grubs while removing it?
Does turnip also require loose soil
Apart from he colour, we also lose nutrients. If u want to minimize the loss of nutrients, wash the greens before u chop them.
This is typical mistake that happens in most kitchen.it is more convenient to wash greens after chopping but the flipside is loss of nutrients.
It is like extracting juice from sugar cane, throwing it away and then trying to eat the fibre and SAP!!
Are turnip leaves edible?
What a variety of greens
Mint looks so fresh! I'm sure it's as aromatic as it looks lovely!!
Brinjals look delicious. What variety is this please?
Please share a pic of avarekai plants
What is the time frame to harvest lettuce..
Good morning, first pumpkin ..and perfect
This is due to cucumber mosaic virus or downey mildew fungus.
Either cases, prune severely affected leaves and apy Mycodim.
Kk what to do for this | |
is it a fair assumption that a tomato plant will give about 2 kgs in its lifespan? say half kg per week for 4 weeks?
Hi Sir and Team, I am trying to concentrate on Greens this summer. And this is my first harvest. Can you help me know
1. Sowing to Harvesting time of diff greens
2. The process of using the soil for the next batch
3. Usual pests to watch out
I had similar situation. Plant full if flowers two weeks ago & now only 3 fruits look like they are surviving.
I wonder if this is the norm when we grow in a pot.
Moderate watering. Do not over water
One of my clients have been harvesting up to 9kg per plant!
I have been harvesting about 7kg several times.
5kg to 6kg should be the exoectabke range.
In commercial farming 3.5 to 5.5 kg per plant is the yield range
For all typical greens, all these aspects are covered in my handbook
When we grow in a pot, the plant has limited resources.
We need to compensate for the by nurturing frequently.
We usually flunk in providing enough nutrition as it is a cost element but over water.
Both are adversaries for the plant.
Just when the plant starts flowering it should be fed heavily with compost and regular feed of liquid nutrition.
Watering should be moderate. It is a dry land plant.
Pest/disease control goes without saying.
Last but not the least, excessive foliar growth will also limit fruit production. I.e. limited nitrogen rich feed early on before flowering.
Nitrogen as in NPK? | |
Yes in NPK, N is nitrogen
Nice set up. What's the nutrient rich water?
Sir, pl. watch the video.
Is that can i put nutrimix
Pl ID the plant | |
So very happening sir!!!!
Wow!! I'm gaping at the brinjals! They are super!
Amazing. Tell us how to grow
you are setting up the trelly already.
in one bed plant 4 to 5 grape saplings. that's all!!
Beautiful sir all the best
This weather is ok? | |
April is the time for planting.
If you want i can arrange for plants during my next batch of fruit trees procurement.
Sure that will be nice | |
What seed is this? | |
Can you pls arrange one for me as well? TIA
Question for Amaranth leaves - do you stop using leaves once it starts to have seeds ? Thank you
Typically, when ot starts flowering the leaves will start losing taste, shrinks in size snd becomes fibrous.
You can harvest until it is palatable.
Wow!! What is your pot size ma'am?
It is growing in a long planter box built into the terrace retainer wall.
Then it's a bed really!! Nice. Do post a picture if possible
Greens seem to be the most dependable... they grow and regrow... Very nice
True. Easy to achieve self sufficiency
I have realised it is possible to achieve self sufficiency in tomatoes, green chillies, greens, Brinjal, even in small spaces. And creeper gourds.
Whereas for vegetables like bhindi ,beans, we need several pots - atleast 25 ,to get decent qty of yield . So I stick to basic daily required veggies and try to achieve self sufficiency. Our garden strategy when space is limited
You have made the right observation.
Same pinch. I just cut them, and put them to cook.
Last harvest i prepared palya
This time added in bisibelebath
Even in my house too | |
Along with tomotoes pappaya saplings also is there
I too remove the papaya saplings, but I leave at least a few tomatoes and soppu saplings.
Few tomoto plants and soppu is there
Sir which organic fertilizer works best for cabbage and cauliflower?
Ok. Thank you sir | |
Hi Kk sir, some my plants are turning this color what is the problem and what's has to be done in order to prevent this to other plants
I want to sow musk melon, ridge gourd and snake gourd seed. Is it the right season?
Yes. For musk a bit late, but still ok.
There are atleast a billion such resources on the internet to forward.
I have been repeatedly appealing thst any forward should accompany personal first hand experience, annotations or any kind of meaningful contribution.
For instance, in this case if you think this method is good, first you try and then share your experience rather than blindly forwarding.
With internet and google it is very easy to search for information. This group is not needed for that.
Each one of us for sure will be searchhing for new information and finding something or the other interesting. It doesn't take too much time for the group to fill with forwards!
Qualifying the information received/available as authentic requires effort. This group is meant for that.
Many members in the group continue to be here mainly because there is no flooding of messages. And personally am not for it too.
I think the intent and purpose of the group has been repeatedly and sufficiently made clear over time.
Any future blind forwards irrespective of the subject will not be appreciated and that member willl be removed from the group
Hi fellow gardeners . For a plant with slightly dry top soil removing the top soil and replacing it with compost will it help growth of plant ?
I seem to have missed attending to one plant and the top soil is dry but plant is still green. Hence the doubt
Covering the top soil with dry leaves and then watering may help to retain the moisture
Please suggest plants to grow in shady patches
When in doubt it helps to ask before taking action.
But the plant was dying sir. I'll send you a better picture of white spots on the leaves and the plant itself.
Look for small adult beetles and share the image.
Sir what can i add to my cherry plant for it to fruit better. Lot of flowers but they dont all translate to fruit
It will not fruit when the temperature is above 25. It will only flower.
You can expect next fruiting around August.
What can i do about this?
Control ants, again by neem spray.
Ants bring aphids. Aphids bring infections.
Ants in vermicompost bin also not good?
As long as you can isolate comopsting area from gardening area
But when we add the compost to the pots? 0
If I am correct you have asked about entering ants in "vermicompost bin" which is being used for preparing compost. As per my knowledge ants will eat dead earthworms, & these will go deep into soil in open ground where ants can't enter.
You can see in picture I have put water around bin & mesh to avoid mouse.
you will add compost to pot without worms , then no problem.
One of my tomato plants has several fruits like that
Any thoughts on what may have been the cause
This seems to have been eaten by big black worms(armyworms). Look for them n destroy them. They don't die with need oil, from my experience
Ah, Ok.. thanks for the tip !
Neem oil is quite effective on fall army worms if that is one that has caused damage.
If it is this worm or any caterpillar for that matter, you should see its poop scattered below. Pl. Check and confirm.
It could also be a squirrel.
Recrntly i had made a video on fall army worm and its contol with neem oil.
Thanks KK.. I looked for it and didn't see it, not on leaves, not in an obvious way on the soil
Will look closely next couple days, should be interesting if I uncover anything
These worms don't come out during day time. Most damage is done after dark, when the worms are safe from their predators
Do you spray anything other than neem oil, or just cut the losses and start over
Or you can do the 3G diy spray. Recipe in the handbook.
But the fact is it indeed works!
IMO, it is an acquired skill to do early detection and evasive action.. this group and tips really help in building that experience
They are the nymph stage. They pass couple of stages as nymph before becoming an adult.
I have noticed that it also kills the ladybug larve
Yes it does. It cannot distinguish but we can.
Catch 22....do we get rid of the aphids and scare away the friendly beetles?
Sometimes ignorance is bliss!
You could leave some to ladybugs and spray on the rest where the ladybig larvae have still not populated.
In the west, you get to buy friendly bugs and introduce them in your garden!
Yes sir ... Will try that. Thank you very much!
Is Neem oil good for leaf rust?
It is a insecticide, fungicide and bactericide
Can control early stages of fungal and bacterial infections.
At advanced stages, the multiucation of the pathogens will be faster than the action of the spray. Hence Copper based concoctions become necessary.
Is it just leaf rust? | |
Might be due to spider mites.
Mine is in a pot. Maybe i should put it in a drum
Let this flowering stage pass. Do not disturb now.
Sir, I have 3 trees and they are all fully grown.. if it is possible, I'd advice to transplant to unleash it's full potential.. I got lucky and they have been producing fruits even before I was providing adequate nutrition. In the last couple years, w all nutrimix and compost they have produced good quantity of fruits
Good harvest of methi. I am unsuccessful with growing methi . Several attempts now!
This is from seeds? Please give me tips to sow onion seeds
I have intentionally planted one avocado on my terrace for the experience.
Yes. Last season i had provided tips about growing onions in our AQUASAVE pots. Copying the text beliw for your quick reference. Adapt it for ground.
Sowing season for onion begins!
Practise to start sowing 20 seeds per week from now and enjoy weekly harvest of atleast 12 onions from February!
Our AQUASAVE greens planter along with our pottings is an ideal combination to get started
In this planter pot, you can grow 14 large sized onions.
Initially sowing can be 1.5" between seeds and 1.5" between rows. Harvest spring onions skipping alternate ones in the row and entire alternate row. So you will be left with 3" spacing between seeds and rows for onions to form.
Within few weeks of sowing, you can get lots of spring onions and then let the rest of the plants form the tuber.
Make 5 rows initially and sow 10 seeds per row.
So, you can start with 40 plants (potentially)
It will take about a week to 10 days for the seeds to germinate.
Do not water too much. It is a dry land crop. Water only when the top 2" of the soil goes dry.
The drainage design in AQUASAVE pots make it easier for onions to grow. These onions i grew was in one of such pots and survived the rainy season!
After 6 - 8 weeks, harvest spring onions (complete plants) alternately in row 1, 3 & 5 and entire row 2 and 4.
This way you get to enjoy sizeable harvest of spring onions and make space for about 14 onions to form.
After harvesting spring onions fill the gap with fresh potting mix.
Wow. How many years old plant?
Its 5 yrs old. Grown from seed
Wow!! Such nice potatoes
Lovely, I love methi but never seem to be able to grow them well..
Morning glory. Grows like a weed.
Thanks, i sowed vegetable seed
Wow! Sir. In how big a container?
Ok sir. This is the same as the one i have
For the size of the container, it was an epic fail, but a part of valuable learning in my R&D.
This was an experiment with a new potting mix meant for roots. Didn't work. All carrots got either split or stunted.
Yielded only 750g while atleast 3kg would have been a respectable harvest.
3 kgs from one container??
Wow thTs super. How close can we plant them?
KK ,Ashish from Ciclo cafe may get in touch with you regarding a garden set up
3" between seeds in a row
Cauliflower peeping from within!
Thrips or spidermite infestation
Remove infected leaf clusters and dispose off.
Neem or SasyaRakshak spray
Ok. Thank you sir | |
Pl. Share pictures of the drum and the plant.
One possibility is the soil has become too soggy and unable to hold anymore.
Other possibility is the soil underneath has completely dried out. Whatever you are feeding is just flowing out from the sides before getting absorbed.
Looking at the overall condition of plant, drum and soil one could assess better.
I will take more pics sir
Picture of the plant | |
From these two images not much can be inferred.
I will take more pics | |
Will these do sir? | |
I watered it yday evening
There is nothing wrong.
Just reduce the feed such that it doesn't leach anymore.. why feed extra.
I have planted some chillies in it as well
1/4 acre organic farming
20th December status when we started.
Objective is to organically grow 20 vegetables to feed the kitchen with adequate weekly quantities through out the year.
Kitchen capacity: cooking for 50 people daily.
To protect itself from harsh Sun. Growing vine will provide some shade. I think you have planted already.
Observe at night, it will in sleeping posture!
Now itself it has taken the horizontal posture!
It will be exactly opposite at night.
Amazing nature isn't it?
Plants take care of themselves so well!
Morning just about Sunrise if you do a time-lapse, within 30 to 45 min. You can witness the leaves opening up to the sky.
I have actually sat in front and observed in awe!!
How come your plants are so healthy without any trace of pest ? Secret plz .
None of my produce has gone without pest so far and controlling pest is the main struggle that I have experienced with no chemical gardening.
My secret is simple. | |
I diligently follow every single prescription i make here.
I once again emphasize Neem spray is the predominant control measure i deploy.
I mainly focus on prevention by growing healthy plants that have stronger immunity against pests and diseases
Tips for growing plants healthy
Thanks for these insights.
Helps to keep the white color intact.
Just shared in lighter vein!
Ok. Will it effect the further growth?
Proudly presenting the composting and gardening blog from Viji Ganesh.
I am truly honoured ,KK . All my garden insights are learned through, from you combined with the actual garden experience . It is 5 yrs now since I don't have a garden as my apartment doesn't allow it..I went through a phase unable to cope with the abscence of garden , gardening ..till one day I decided to set up gardens for others who may not have had the opportunity like us to learn it scientific ally.
And it is better than before ! Ofcourse I don't do commercial projects ,but do it on small scale and for friends. And document my learnings in this blog.
*You can take the garden from the gardener but never the gardener from the garden*
You have amazingly overcome the limitation by deciding to help others!! Bravo!
An insightful, humorous, satisfying collection of experiences of an urban farmer!! Very nice!
Good morning! Please do help me in identifying if these insects are friend or foe. We have a complete ecosystem thriving!
It is the same larva you posted earlier going through various nymph stages
Are they the outer shell of the beetle?
Doesn't look like any damage has been done by them to the leaves.
Just lift it up from the soil by adding a spacer. May he vouole of sticks or mulch with dry leaves so that the bottom portion doesn't touch the soil.
Yes sir, leaves look untouched so they may well be the beetles. I'll check again. I'm just being wart because a neighbouring plant slowed down to aphids.
Ok sir.... Will surely do this
Blog posts by Malathi Karpur is a valuable collection of her journey in gardening, composting, engaging people, teaching, sharing and caring!
It dates back to 2012 when even i had no clue i will be touching the soil to grow my own food and make it my living!!
These leasurely read blog posts are educational as much they are inspirational. Above all, they are Original!!
I just shared the link to your blogpost.
WhatsApp sort of makes one lazy .... and gives you instant gratification.
True. Blogging was erstwhile whatsapp of sort!
I would highly encourage as many in the group as possible to have their own circle of influence and inspire them about the healthy living possibilities and potential with food gardening and composting.
I have volunteered at my daughters' yoga school to set up a terrace garden.
As urban dwellers, we don't often have the space to explore and i jumped in when a friend asked for help to set up a green space!!
My journey in helping people realise the joy, essence and beauty of growing our own food has started sir!
My gardening, learning, experimenting, everything started in this group and with KK sir! I don't have the words to express the gratitude i have every time i see a seed sprout, every time i harvest a vegetable grown from love!
in the mainstream curriculum, children grossly miss the life skills they deserve. catching them young is the best way!
Parcel to Chennai possible?
Sir i would like one | |
Sir do you have rocket leaves?
Wow!! Looks full of life! Very nice sir!
The season for lettuce is almost over.
With the heat picking up, it will become increasingly difficult for tgem to germinate.
I thought they grew the year round
Neem or SasyaRakshak spray
Move the pot to a cool sunny place.
Does Sasyarakshak help in getting rid of red ants
I have never tried as it is annexpensive affair to apply on ants. Will try and update tomorrow.
Neem is sure to kill the ants it comes in contact with.
cool sunny place... please elaborate. I mean powdery mildew and temp
A place which stays cool through out the day and gets direct Sun!
Thankyou sir I will do it
Powdery mildew form during high day temp and cool nights.
So, by reducing temperature dufference on leaf from day to night, we can avoid its favorablw condition.
Since tondekai requires sunlight, you need to find a location that has the combination of the two.
To make it easier; | |
North, North-East or Nort-west are favorable locations in that order.
Apart from location, how to create such environment
Coz.. I have it in North East. Our building gives it shade.
But still I see it infected. Not growing happily as i had expected
So, the second condition is not met.
Is it infected with pwdery mildew?
If we water the plants in the evening, we have to ensure that we do not spray water on to the leaves. Dampness during cooler nights encourages mildew attack
And since we r now having hotter days and cooler nights, we will have this problem. I had to trim nearly all the branches and now I see some fresh growth
Yes. Day or night, we should avoid watering on the leaves unless we are doing a spray.
Water the soil not plant.
Does this apply to saplings and greens as well ?
Does Cobweb on plants indicate some disease?
Spiders are friends. They spin their web in the evening for a good night's dinner. They help in controlling insect pests that visit at night. By morning they are usually gone!
Lovely. After how many days of planting you got flowers
If you want a big talk, manure the plant generously. They are heavy feeders.
Big pumpkins, big talk!
How much vermicompost should one put in one plant
Double my standard recommendation
Sowed on January 7th 2022
Have a question regarding watering of vines like pumpkin bottle gourd etc, how much water should one be giving in a day
About 1 lt. In this season
6 to 7ft long desirable. They will last a few seasons.
Ok sir! Thank you!! | |
On the occassion of Mahashivaratri Organic Expo has been organized starting ftom 1st March 10am until 2nd March 5am!
And i will be training participants on Bokashi from 2:30 pm to 3:30pm. Entre Free.
We will be doing Jagaran at the stall!!
For mine, after first female flower, there hasn't been any.
Further, the leaves started to turn lemon yellow.
On googling I found that over and under water is both an issue for pumpkin and can cause no female flowers
Since then I have cut back and new leaves are staying green
Sharing fwiw, comments welcome
Oh. I think in our case it is sandy soil. And lot of pollinators and beginners luck to get female flowers I think.
Other just followed preventive maintenance of neem oil spray and jeevamrutha every 15 days and compost when flowering..rest of it was nature's grace
Cut pieces of Bamboo of similar size is available & a better option.
Yes sir, bamboos are a good option....we salvaged these reaper sticks from a friend and was wondering if they could be used.
Definitely could be used. But since they are short, will not be that convenient.
As far as I know leaf status is not an indicator if readiness in colocasia. I don't kniw much about it.
This looks like some issue.
Like most tubers, i read that yellowing of leaves suggest harvest time sir. But I'll check with friends also
Morning beauties!!!! Amazing variety!
Wow!!! You have a bounty
Sir I need help with my tomato plants. Despite effort they are still suffering from bottom end rot. What should i add as an emergency measure? Where am i going wrong?
Same for us for current set of tomato plants. Did regular pest control , fertilizer application and calcium.
Previous harvest (which is still producing) was all fine from bottom rot.
Crush egg shell in to small pieces (mixie)
Fry the crushed shells until it turns brown
For 1 spoon eggshell, add 5 spoons apple cider vinegar in a bottle and shake well. It will bubble. Keep releasing the gas.
Once the bubbling stops, add another spoon shell and stir untill there is some shell residue.
Add vinegar to dissolve shells. Repeat the process until done with all shells.
Store in the fridge as long as you want
5ml in a Lt. of water and feed once a week for Chilli, Tomato, Spinach and such plants that need calcium.
If you can make it, it is one of the best inputs for tomato and chilli plants for soluble calcium.
Calcium deficiency leads to Blossom end rot of tomatoes. In chilli plants, it leads to brittle and curly leaves.
Nice beetle vine how old is it? Are you growing it in a container?
I would like to know if there is lemon type called sadaa bahaar nimbu which yields all year round. If yes, Where can I get it? Can I grow it in a container?
I have to check. | |
Yes, this is a gardener's friend. Will feed on several insect pests.
1. I think it is being grown in pot.
2. Lack of sun light, mine at garden.
3. Now it is reproductive season
Youre right its in a container. But sunlight isnt a problem in my case.
Then it is 3rd. Even my vine is fading with production of seeds. I have planted a basalae twig separately two weeks ago.
Amazing! A complete set-up. Can't wait to see pots and plants!! All the best!
Lovely so well planned!
Thank you sir for this setup
Are the vertical poles free standing?
You can zoom in to check for details. It has a trelly mount attached to the stands.
After a long break due to Corona, happy to put up a stall to engage with public
Awesome. My goal is grow this vegetable some day
Same here..so far not much success in container
Waiting for mine to flower!
Is this planted in the container or ground
Fruits at this stage are falling off..what could be the reason?
They are not getting pollinated. Try hand pollination, it will help
How come the soil is so damp?
Seaside sand. Mornings like this . By mid day top layer dry and hot
Yes, very close to the bay of Bengal. Afternoons the top layer sand is hot to the touch. But if you dig in ,it will be moist. Watering is tricky.
Wow! I've seen so many onions only in the market!
How many times can we harvest spinach from a plant? I usual harvest till the seeds develop. Is this ok?
Yes sir. Thank you | |
Beautiful. Is this in a container?
What are the clues to say it is ready
Irrespective of the size!
Good to know sir | |
Same here, I have also failed miserably. KK, how about a talk on how to grow ivy gourd in containers on the terrace.
That is a useful tip. Thanks.
Just wondering about drying turmeric in whole?
Wont it be difficult to process n powder..
Sure, will plan soon. | |
Turmeric was washed yesterday. It is only kept for drying the wetness after washing as Roopa has gone to Mysore.
Once she is back, it wil be further processed to make powder.
Have started the saplings now. By the end of the month saplings will be available.
Is grass clipping a good mulch? I see lot of dry grass which is atleast 2-3 ft tall and i can clip that
Since no chemical is used in the lawn, it's a great composting matter.
To use it as mulch first sun dry it.
Yes KK. It is bone dry | |
We actually had a fire incident and one whole swath of half sq km got burnt in 1 hour
Even by looks it is so fragrant!!
Sir.... how do we get rid of weeds? Is it prudent to compost them?
Read about weeds on the handbook.
Ok sir! Will do! Thank you!
Small orange size muskmelon
Dragon fruit doesn't need much care
3 to 4 ft radious open space for it to spread
How high does it grow | |
How many months does it take to grow this big
I planted in 20ltr paint bucket
Is it ok kk | |
What's the seed germination medium? Super germination. Totally impressive. Must take some tips from you
Hi malathi madam, I see you have trimmed the top of onions. Any specific reason?
Wow interesting! Whats your personal experience?
Or the black gram | |
I want to learn how to grow this
It is a winter crop. | |
Sir, what is the one that's covering the onion leaves as well as the greens next to it, extreme right
I see tendency towards blosson end rot.
Future harvests from this tomato plant may be affected. Apply dolomite.
Searching for Rosemary from a long time.
And here it is.. | |
Do you have a sapling? | |
No. Will update when available.
Rosemary is avl in lalbagh
You can also find it in an APD nursery nearby
I haven't found in any nearby nurseries.
Thanks for the leads. Will check
Bush beans, Longyard beans massively affected by Aphids..had to cut off most of the climber and have continued with neem oil spray and jeevamrutha. Pumpkins are doing well. Chillies, capsicum flowering..but leaf curl calling for attention.
1) mother of all problems might be ants. Investigate and if true handle them. We have discussed enough about it.
2) If 1) is not address, next ti get affected would be the pumpkin vine!
3) Leaf curl in chilli might be;
Investigate and treat accordingly.
No ants..I checked based on a post here sometime ago
Will investigate and report!
Yesterday's weekly harvest in our Client's terrace raised beds!
So fresh and shiny | |
Is this that place where kids worked on the garden?
yes, while it was being setup. 5th floor terrace
this was wotk in progress. you can see the expanded space waiting for potting mix to be filled
Yes! More growing space and lesser walkways make so much sense!!
I would love to have "as usual" thondekai harvest in my house too
As of now it isn't about whether it is enough for everyone.
More than enough is produced. Distribution is not effective and wastage is high. These two problems cannot be solved by growing own.
But the real issue today is we are growing sickness not health.
We have to grow on our own for health and not because we don't have enough!
Yes.... let's grow for good health!
Good morning, today an entire meal is from the goodness of our garden..
I had a lot of trouble growing Pudina due to ant infestation. I have tried Neem oil spray, talcum powder to keep it under control. I still see an infestation and maybe some colonies below the ground.
I grow in pot , of recycled pudina. Never had problem.
No: 24, 3rd floor, P.J.Nehru Rd. 3rd stage, "Mindspaces" building, BEML layout, RRNagar, B'lore 560098
(above "The Aravind Store", next to Sub-Registrar's office )
Pl show entire plant | |
Not likely. They are mainly cornivore. Their herbivore diet is mostly leaves and flowers.
Amazing! I'm completely in awe!!
nice.. the tomatoes are really big and red
As it is a tall tree...how do we pluck the drumstick
With a long pole with a curved knife at the end
I was planning to get a lemon plant. Would a 16 pot be sufficient or should I get a bigger container?
Sir posted this a while back....it's brilliant guidelines!
In villages they have long bamboo sticks with a sickle attached to one end which helps cut
Look for small green beetle pests
Todays menu Halasina beeja plus thondekai palya
4 to 5 yrs old. Was in a pot earlier. 2 yrs in a drum
Wow! Your bitter gourd plant gives a lot!! Very nice!
Could somebody tell me what kind of medicine is effective against the above bug. It has completely eaten up the honge tree outside my house and has now started to infest the other plants. All this in a couple of days. Would really appreciate some advice on how to tackle this
Haven't seen this on Honge in all these years
What is it and how do we control it
That is a variety of centipede. Neem spray acts as a deterrent but cannot destroy the pest.
My my!!! Such beautiful harvest messages to open in the morning! Good morning urban farmers!
I guess so. Try one | |
Friends need a suggestion on avocado plant.we have planted a sapling which propagated through the seed in our compost .
Had attended avocado seminar organised by GKVK last year. Will be able to comment on this.
Avocado plants from seeds take atleast 6-8 years to bear fruits. The quality of fruit will be different than the parent plant.
Saplings which have been grafted by scion of mother tree will fruit from 3
My lime plant has quite a few tiny limes. Do I need to remove them?
Looks so big. Age? Variety? When did it start to fruit?
Where can I get Mycodim, rock phosphate and dolomite? QL ?
It's about 4yers old, grafted. Started fruiting from past years. Don't know the variety
Also , does it serve the purpose to spray pesticides (organic ofcourse ) when it is raining heavily ?
Yes its is. When did you plant?
Depends on the variety.
I have observed this leathery fruiting on a tree on ground. Few fruits are normal. But a few are discoloured and leathery like this. Don't know why
Blackish layer on leaves is due to a prolonged activity of pests and microbes when the plant is not cared for.
Ants bring aphids or mealy bugs to the tree. They suck the sap of leaves and produce a sugary nector which ooze out of their body. It is a super food for ants and their colony.
The leftovers on the tree leads to sticky deposits on the leaves and bark. These deposits attract fungal growth resulting in black sooty layers.
Prune severely blackened leaves and spray liquid soap solution (10ml liquid soap, 1 tsp baking soda in 1 lt. water) to clear off the layers in the remaining leaves. Nutrure the plant with vermicompost and jivamrut for new foliage growth.
If this thick skin is only in this batch or in some fruits, it might be for one or a combination of following reasons;
1) Typically it takes around 4 months from flowering to harvest. If the fruit has taken excessively long time to ripen due to weather conditions or;
Excessive nitrigen particularly after flowering stage.
If you get 4 to 6 hrs between Foliar spray (of liquid nutrition or neem oil) and rain, it is still effective.
Mycodim spray can be effective up to 5 days.
Also KK , can you suggest a spray can for trees. To spray organic foliar sprays ?
Battery sprayer is required.
Note on Battery Sprayer
Problem i am facing in sourcing battery sprayer is that they are functional but not durable.
There are many failure points in the product. Week on week you will experience one or the other failures.
After sales support is almost non existent even though they promise the moon while making sales
I have already seen three clients who bought online/city market and now struggling.
The sprayer i am using has its spray head thread lose already and have to hold it tight while spraying.
I have approached many manf. and traders with enquiries for procurement. No reliable headway yet.
100% all products available in the market are from china. Just rebranded in many cases and pitched as made in india.
So, while you buy please ask questions on the above aspects to get satisfactory response and written commitment for support.
And Do not buy from Agrimart in KR market at the junction of jc road to market road.
He cheated me of 20k , 100% advance i paid for the sprayer.
Update: Even at the recent Krishi Mela visit, it was dissapointing that there was nothing new in this regard.
It looks like we have to take a chance trying one or the other, share our experiences and zero in on some make/model.
How to avoid thatpowder on the bottom of the plant
What is the solution | |
Regarding the above problem
I discussed with you kk sir
Tell me what to do | |
I asked you to share a picture focused on the powder.
I now have a fairly decent one that I have been using for the past 10 months. The only thing that went kaput was the charger which one can buy for 200
Yes Sir. Will follow. | |
If anybody else also have tried a battery sprayer, pl. share your experience.
One year warranty by the seller who is located in Hosur. He is the one who is assembling
This is what i was suspecting and looking for in the case reported by Mrs. Anu Radha.
This is a stem borer pest drilling hole in to the tree trunk.
Normally they are solo. If you can catch it red handed and physically handle it, that is most effective.
If you see many such borers in the garden, then pheromone trap meant to trap them would help.
Are they flying type or like maggot?
I tried many times to spot these in action but not successful so far.
They are really wide varieties.
They could be moth caterpillars, wasp like looking flies, beetles or other.
Entomolists may be able to identify just be looking at how the powder is formed, but i can't.
These scholarly articles from iniversities have compiled good varieties of stem borers.
You can check if you have spotted any of those insects near your tree bu couldn't guess that could be the reason
Can I sow lettuce now? | |
Can someone please post a picture of the pesticide spray can for trees ?
On my terrace it grows the year round
I have also sowed last week. Waiting to germinate
Wonderful!! What was the soil mix used?
Lettuces requires consistent ambient tempr. lower than 25 C
Check weather forecast for the next 10 days. If max. Temp. Is below the threshold during that period, you will increase the chance of successful germination.
As of now peak temp in the coming weak reaches 28.
As i said all are from china and no technocal support and warranty.
It does not mean all are bad. But never know the item you bought is good and that is the problem.
Thank you! Kk sir's formula. 3:3:4 of compost, cocopeat and red soil.
Weather has become so unpredictable even for IMD.
Until afternoon, the prognosis for the week was sunny days but its raining cats and dogs already!!
Latest IMD weather release says, this continues through the week until 17th!
All winter sowing plans accordingly needs adjustments.
Considering their rigorous usage, it seems to be a good one. Anyone using this brand can share their experiences
It looks like we have to take a chance trying one or the other, share our experiences and zero in on some make/model.
The microfarm installed in your terrace is based on the learnings from this training!
Some variety of Brinjals.. I am not sure which one
I know this is not related to growing edible plants.....But would be grateful if someone knows whether there is any special fertilizers I need to buy for orchids? Thanks in advance.
2 tsp of Nutrimix per plant once in 2 months is all it needs besides humid environment
Does it work for all flowering plants?
Yes. For flowering plants 1 tbsp per month.
This is for a small plant. Depending on the size of the plant adjust the qty.
Continuing on overwintering, what other plants will go through this KK . Would be interesting to learn.
Are chilly plants perennials?
Biennials. i.e. 2 years.
To my surprise, i found a few flowering chilli plants while revamping the garden. I am still not understanding its cycle.
Please share some insights
They can live up to 2 years and yield 3 times a year given the right conditions.
Which are those 3 times of the year?
Sometimes the weather men can get it toally wrong
Yeah. The first day it rained heavily in our area. But the next day, it was Summer!!
Should I harvest them? | |
1st time, plant was sold as lemon.
Harvest and check one which you think most ripe among them. Then you know if you should harvedt all or wait.
Is it in the container or ground
First passion fruit of the season.
Onion can be planted with lemon.
Do the watering regime of lemon and onion match?
They both like drenching and drying.
Sir how much longer should i leave them.in the planter?
When did you sow them? | |
6 or 8 weeks ago | |
Then they will further grow for another 4 weeks.
Give a generous dose of compost for further growth in the coming weeks.
Harvest when you observe that the curd is not getting any bigger.
Ok sir will apply some vermicompost
Assuming your assessment of 6 to 8 weeks is correct!
I will try and recall the exact time sir
I am told this is Ponnakannam(Malayam). A green that helps to sharpen eye sight.
It seems this stem can be planted.
Yes. Also a common bordering plant in landscaping. There are very many varieties.
Name in kannada please | |
An old picture of pannanganni keerai! Easy to grow, hassle free from stems
Ponnangani is highly nutritious - as can be said about all greens!
Pon-aakkum-meni --> makes the body as valued as gold, some play with the Tamil lang
How f | |
Do you cook it? | |
Also which variety of this plant is edible?
All ponnankanni (tamil) / Honagone (kannada) varieties are edible. Rich in iron content.
Usually slightly pink variety, leaves and small stems , we make curry
My radish bulbs did not form fully. Wondering what should be the fertilizer schedule for this 35 days crop
If you start with a rich soil (refer to my pottkng mix recipe), it doesn't require much during its growth.
Too much nitrigen may cause excessive leaf growth stunting the root. Give a boost od additional phosphorous (rock ph.) And add a handful of woodash per sqft for good root growth
I think it may have been | |
Honna gone- a bunch of gold, Which may have changed over time to honagone.
Our ancestors knew the virtues of each plant better than we do now.
You can make sambar cooking it with dhal
Its Rasana beeru in Kannada. Does anyone know the English name? Google says galangal or Thai ginger.
Rasna plant is Alpinia Calcarata
Galangal is Alpinia Galanga
They are of different family.
Rasna leaves is used as herb where as galangal roots are used for medicinal purpose.
Wow!, wonder if thats how Rasna the beverage got its name
I don't know how much of the drink Rasna has the herb Rasna!! But the name for sure!
Yes, the genesis of the name is what i meant
On Cocopeat: should we wash it first or just make a powder by soaking water?
Rasna name is simply Rasa meaning juice
I will make a video and share.
There is no need to wash cocopeat!
1) Take a tub large enough to lie the block flat.
2) Fill the tub with a bucket of water.
3) Let it sit for 30min. | |
4) It will absorb all the water and swell.
We get some quantity of coconut fibre from home use..can we dry. Powder & use ?
That you can use for mulching
Ah. Thank you. My aunt was asking if I want the rhizomes and I didnt know wht it was
I can share it with you kk once I get it from her if u want
Can we use it for cooking? Any idea?
I have rasna plant. However, pl. get it. Can compare if there is any difference.
I am looking for halangal.
All 7 of my bottle gourd saplings got eaten by some predator. Squirrel or snail, don't know
Are these small guards available like we have for trees saplings on road side?
I think so. Looks tempting!
So many nice harvests today!
Harvested the first one today
Looking for recommendation for seedling trays.ost online are very poor quality and small
I am looking for little big ones that can allow seedlings like pumpkin tomato bottle gourd to grow to a decent size
Almost all videos of gardeners in US have these only
We have two 3 sizes | |
98 pockets for small seeds
50 pockets for big seeds (suitable for your requirements)
14 pockets for papaya and similar plants
They are medium quality. The last long in nursery condition. In direct sunlight couple of months.
Looks so well developed

Sir my ginger plant after several months still remains green. It is lush green though it is time to harvest. What should i do?
It depends on when you planted.
They mature usually in Jan/Feb.
If the leaves are green, the rhizomes are still developing and tender. You can still harvest for immidiate consumption.
Ok. Sir thank you | |
How many coconuts would it take to get 3 litre coconut water? Making Panchgavya
Tender coconut about 3 to 4
Matures ones, may be 10 to 15
These numbers are for 1lt coconut water! so, x3.
It is not mandatory to add coconut water. You can also do without it.
I have Urad dal ,which has become old is it better to put directly in to compost or fermenting by soaking and then adding in to compost will be better any suggestions?
Just make it wet and add in to compost bin. Some of them nay germinate in the compost bin. While turning the pile, they mix in and becone compost.
Wondering if the moisture in the compost bin wouldnt be sufficient for the urad dal to absorb and degenerate ...
Why would you think so? | |
Since you said wet it and add ...i thought there would be enough moisture to hydrate the urad dal..hence..wondered
Typically kitchen waste added have water in them. Dal is dry and will take more time to absorb from the sorrounding. Wetting it accelerates a bit.
Even better is to ferment it as was one of the option in the question. Since that requires extra effort, not worth it as it is not pressed for time.
Can we plant grape plants now? KK?
Also thinking of planting a sandalwood plant. Where can one get it?
Risky after it becomes 10yrs old
Yes read about the restriction. Just curious if you know where to source it from

What is the view on using banana peel powder for flowering and fruiting plants? What should be the frequency of feeding?
I use ripe banana peels , used/washed tea leaves, onion skins all dried, powdered for my potted plants.may b once in 2 months.
Does the black mold/fungus on the onion not harm the plants?
Restarted my terrace garden after a 2 year break, oh wow! Feels so good.. to grow our own food!

Miss you KK ! do you remember snacks, cool fresh drinks and and Tea supply while we were working on this project in hot sun?
Bottle guard . 2 | |
Everyday was a celebration working in the garden and getting pampered by your hospitality!!
Nice to see you back in your garden inspite of your hectic travel schedules.
we should be seeing a lot of your harvest pictures then!!
why don't you share?? | |
I need the following | |
I will process all sapling orders on first cum first serve basis.
@QL, should the suckers in chillies be removed?
When people post pictures of their harvest, it woul be nice if they also include photos of the actual plant in it's container and info about the container size / space used in your back yard and any other info deemed important for amateur gardeners like us
If it has enough soace to spread, there is no need.
If it is in the container, prune it to manage the size and nutrition.
Sir, will come on Friday
Is this just one more variety? Or anything special?
1) bottle gourd- 2 | |
2) tomato - 9 | |
3) long yard bean - 1 | |
4) broad bean - 2 | |
5) ridge gourd - 1 | |
We will come today evening to pick

Is it ok to use 6 inch deep planter or bigger?
I dont think one needs a very deep planter. 6 to 8 works well
The red brick planters are so ethnic and elegant. Bring so much happiness just viewing it
Finally, the garden is complete!!
All blended together to meet all of client's needs along with aesthetic appeal!!
I and Roopa have literally toiled our labour last one week since gardening labourers ditched us midway.
We together laid about 300sqft of lawn!!
At the end it was all worth it when the customer was very happy with the outcome!!
Is it on the terrace | |
No, in the backyard | |
Its so perfect just like in a dream land!
Thats KK meticulous ! | |
Todays blessings from the garden
KK, one of the trees yields fruit with tough, thick ,jagged ski n..
Wondering if it is the variety or some nutritional issue
Is the skin edible inspite of rough texture?
Edible but not enjoyeable.
Good morning KK sir. My ivygourd plant is growing but no sign of any flowering or fruiting. Can you please suggest any remedy

Sir please help me solve my problem
Hoping it is not rats. Can squirrel come in?
These are beans, correct?
Aphids brought by ants. Neem oil can easily eliminate aphids and temporarily control ants. You have to review your method of application.
Use boric powder recipe for ant control
1) Borax or Boric powder (carrom board powder acvailable in medical store)
Take 2 tbsp each of boric powder and sugar and mix with few drops of water to make a dough
Roll it in to small marble
Place these marbles in the trail of ants up to its colony. About 4-5 marbles
Sugar is the lure. | |
Ants will pick the dough from marbles and take them to their colony.
Entire colony consumes this feed
Boric acid is hygroscopic. It swells up inside the ants by dehydrating them
The entire colony (almost) will collapse in 1 or 2 applications.
Repeat this for all colonies to get rid of them from your garden
As a preventive measure, at the first sight of ants, follow this procedure.
Any way to prevent them ( ants) from coming ? Colonising ?
The more vigilant you are better proactive control possible. You cannot stop them from coming but if you find them on day 1, easier to control with neem or boric powder.
So who all are coming for the workshop. I have done my registration.
I'm attending as a Residential Participant
Instead of putting mesh you can pvc pipe bigger one at least four inch hight
Until the plant to grow bigger
That will prevent Sunlight and air
if both of you are joining the residential program then we can plan our travel together. What do you think?
Waw , super crop | |
I will be coming from Varthur, Whitefield side.
I am told that 3G solution (paste of garlic, ginger and green chillies along with neem oil) can get rid of aphids
I will connect with you offline and confirm
Is it in the ground or on terrace. How big is the plant. Can you please send the pic of the plant and tell me how u have maintained it. I have not been successful. Small fruits come and they don't develope big.

Helping a client with his 2 acre plantation to improve soil quality, plant mgmt and integrated pest mgmt.
It should be done before the flowers come?
It is a compost pit in the client's farm harvesting the compost.
Remember the permaculture guild we made in Nita's farm? After accumulating all farm water in the pit, they turn in to compost which can be harvested.
Will this stop the worms in fruits?

Sir, any solution for ants, neem oil is not working
KK sir can you please tell me what is Sasyarakshak made of
Thank you so much | |
All 3 are powdery mildew infection.
Remove all severely affected leaves and apply neem spray day1 and day 3. If it does not come under control, you have to spray Mycodim.
Happy to see you with Akashji!
Pl. convey my regards to him and his team.
And i hope you guys made Quantum Leaf popular there!
This was a test harvest. Most of it remains burried in the ground
This is pretty much done and you can go for full harvest.
I don't need so much so can I leave it in the ground and harvest later?
You can leave until January. Beyond that it will become more fibrous and also propagates new growth after which you cant harvest them.
You start harvesting some every week for the next 4 to 5 weeks.
And keep few fingers for replanting in March.
Those harvested can be kept in fridge for few weeks and also processed in to paste for longer shelf life with other ingredients.
Yes they need staking support for upto 4-5ft height from soil.
Did you miss posting cucumber fotos this time.
Just harvested Turmeric. What is the best way to process it into powder? TIA
What is to be done with the mother rhizomes?
thats a great harvest | |
Actually we are bringing down the terrace garden for maintenance work on the terrace. Hence uave not sowed anyting new since few weeks.
But the extended rains delayed the whole thing.
Last season there were knowledge sharing on processing turmeric.
You can follow that thread
Is this the right time to start strawberries?
Raw haldi pickle is a great side for curd rice and ofcourse has immense health benefits too.
Wash,Peel, cut into discs . Add lemon juice ,enough so that the haldi discs float in it , salt, slit green chillies. Preserves well for a fortnight in a glass jar in the fridge.

U must have seen in KK sir's house.
KK asking this question!
Good morning KK sir. | |
Sorry. Didn't realise that.
Kk sir, where u have grown beans.
As per my understanding, it's a long and deep tub like construction made on the terrace for growing plants
Ok, thanks. So, that's called cary.
This is what I understood and seen from pics of my friends who are growing on their terrace
That construction behind the lady

Tq sir I will be coming on 5th Thursday. Talked with mr. Dilip reg enrollment.
Okay..this has been my schedule both last year and this year.
Well drained soil. Full sun. Keep the soil just moist, do not let the soil fully dry.
After sowing seeds, 1st water drench is mixed with Trichoderma. 2nd time watering add little Epsom salt to water.
After germination, 1st couple of weeks, every 4-5 days apply Panchagavya (3 times in 2 weeks).
Then on every 2 weeks, little of vermicompost + Rock Phosphate OR mustard cake + Rock Phosphate. Once in between, after about 6 to 7 weeks, few Seaweed crystals. Also Trichoderma water drench once again halfway through...
Harvest at 90 days! | |
Sea weed crystals! A new addition from what I've used.... could you please explain usage and dosage?
Just a tsp like 10-12 granules mix up in the soil and water
For a 12 inch pot | |
Seaweed just once in about 5 to 6 weeks after sowing
Our Phytonic Plus can be used. It is made of seaweed along with other growth promoters.
No it is clove beans | |
So...nice did you get bitter gourd seeds from KK...even iam looking for it
If you are going to Swadeshi Mela, pl. do visit our Quantum Leaf stall #108.

Wondering if I can replant those with leaves
Never tried with leaves. Give it a go.
It is roots usually. | |
I saw in case of banana for example. Planting without leaves and with leaves. The leaves wilted after a while and new shoots started to come
Depends on how stressed the slips are during transplant.
Leavescare trimmed to lighten the baggage of the plant.
Kitchen garden begind the fatm house.
I am consulting this project to improve soil health and quality.
An Organic Backyard Garden project from Quantum Leaf!
Our client Shravan, introduced by @vasuki.composting, recently built a beautiful home at The Goodearth. He particularly chose the plot since it had the largest backyard space for gardening.
He and his wife dreamt of having a green space to spend their quality time, and they had specific expectations from the garden
1 A homogeneous blend of ornamental, fruits, flowers, and vegetable garden with their own sweet spots
2 A sunny sitout to enjoy the early morning sip of hot coffee
3 A green carpet | |
4 Solid floor walkways to access all parts of the garden
5 Retain the ioen rain water channel and protect it from soil runoff
6 Groundcovers all along the channel bordering the green carpet
7 A stepped flower garden elevated from the ground
8 Hanging ornamental plants
9 Last but not least, to layout the entire garden to spot any tresspassing by snakes quickly and be able to safely capture them
Followed by a visit to the location, a concept sketch was prepared, reviewed with the client, and finalized with minor adaptations.
Except for the stepped flower garden corner, there was no masonry work to avoid the use of cement and any other synthetic material. The whole garden is set up with organic and natural soil inputs, including for the lawn.
Our team's relentless effort over a week was all worth it when the client was happy when he had his first morning sip of coffee in the garden!
The garden was set up during Mid.Dec.2022, and they already had two harvests from the vegetable garden, flowers blooming, and the lawn lush green and well settled.
Just visited today, and the outcome as you see in the pictures were so fulfilling!! Every time we complete such projects, the joy we experience is out of bounds!!
My friend gave this for new year.
Kindly let me know the ratio of the potting mix
It is a temperate climate flower
If you plant now, by the time it is ready to flower in about 4 months, it will be very hot in blore. So, it may not flower but only foliage.
I have never attempted to grow it so have no experience with it.
I hope the above referenced article gives you useful tips.
Have tried it, only foliage but now flowers Like Kk said, in Bangalore, it's too late. Maybe Sept Oct should be the right time to sow. U can store the bulbs n plant them next season
How to make turmeric powder from harvested turmeric roots?
Steps have already been shared here by someone. Just search for it.
Guess it's over grown n the seeds must have sprouted inside. It happened to my seemebadanekai( Coyote)
This is happened to all of them and size of the gourd was not much
In coyote that is normal. But in ridge gourd never had seen this happening before.
But our hypothesis too is the seeds in the gourd might be germinating.
Did you get it? | |
Arishina from two grow bags
Todays harvest for festival
I want red passio fruit sapling or seeds
After the festival any time ok
I will come and collect | |
It is >15 yr old house with zero maintenance. Floor is chipping off
Getting the floor done. Also will create a greenhouse for further experiments.
It is good to re arrange the terrace garden
Can't imagine how it was
How to store ginger and turmeric roots for anting in April? They seem to dry when kept in the open
Just keep it indoors in shade. They will start slowly dehydrating, but that's ok. They will start hrowing shoots when the climate is conducive. That's when you can plant them in the soil.
Can you please share some insights on how you ensure daily supply of greens? How often you sow?
Thats a good observation! Supply of greens non stop:-
With experience I have this simple setup that works effectively:
- Have one green(as a backup or as a substitute), doesnt have to be sown again and easy to grow with less maintenance.
Example: Doddepatre soppu. Mild taste that can be consumed as one complete side dish
- Grow in large pots. I have Lilly pots that has diameter of 33 inches.
One option: is to have 2 or 3 pots of the same kind of green( example: Palak)
Second option: One pot for one green. Harvest half side and immediately sow into that spot
Tip: Rotation of crops. Thats KKs tip!
I lost my gardening handbook during data transfer from google drive.
If any of you have downloaded it, can you pl. Share with me? Tia
Sent to your mail id | |
I too purchased this in lalbagh glower show three days ago
Which plant is this | |
What about my red passion fruit sapling or seed sir
We have the sapling but not sure about red or yellow.
I need to check about seeds and will get back.
Hello, wanted to know the weight of turmeric before making to powder and powder
It is the nest of a pest. Neem spray.
This worked wonders.. took 3-4 days to start showing noticeable effects.
Based on our previous year experience- it's 10 : 1 ratio
Approxi 1kg powder from 10kg of turmeric harvest
This is a variety | |
y to harvest. | |
What do we add to the plant when the fruit is ripening and how frequently can you please tell me
Spider mites infestation. Neem spray 1st, 3rd and 7th day.
I believe we can make pest reppelents too with betel leaves.
The trick to harvest chillies is, if you lift it, it comes off easily
This is a 50 ft x 80ft food garden on an empty plot at Vakil Gardens. I have been posting its harvest from time to time, and you might recollect.
There are about 40 fruit trees and 600 sqft of raised beds for food. It takes about 3 hours to water this garden manually.
We are setting up an off grid solar powered and automated irrigation system for the garden to reduce manual effort and ensure timely watering.
1) A sump (instead of tank)
2) Off-grid solar power unit
5) Secured store room for the pump, power, and control units
Sir my potatoes are sprouting!
Can anyone tell me what are Bio fertilizers which QL suggests to be put in soil mix?????
Cost of liquid fertilizer for my small pot plants.
Look for slug/snails. If you spot them, sptinkle diatamaceous earth around the plant. You get it on amazon.
Reduce soil moisture if possible. Else, this will be critical for the plant.
Don't think it is over or under watered.. I haven't added any nutrition to these, I was going to add magnesium and panchgavya and see
I am not knowledgeable about this plant. But, on the net, i found a very similar question answered. Iink here. Might be of help.
I saw something online fill a saucer with vinegar and doy sauce. Leave it in the garden. Will attract all the snails into it
This is my own new method!
Near the plant in the pot that is getting most damage, accumulate some very moist semidecomposed leaves to make a small damp mound.
Place a bowl of activated yeast and sugar on it. Cover the bowl with an inverted plastic pot such that at the rim of the pot, slugs can actually enter in and access the bowl.
If this works, by morning you should see many slugs inside the bowl drowned or inside the pot around the bowl.
You can then dispose them off out of your garden.
Repeat this in many places each night until you are rid of all of them.
After that, improve your water management such that you dont let water accumulate in the pot as well as garden.
Let us know how it went. | |
Try this simple trick. Sprinkle some salt around that pot or plants to avoid snails and slugs.
You should be careful about the dosage. Excess salt will make the soil saline.
4 weeks after planting;
- add compost @ 2 handful per sqft.
(For nitrogen and other nutrients)
- add plant nutrimix @ 1 tbsp per sqft
Two months after planting;
- add potassium supplement (our new product Humvic) once in 2 weeks until harvest
Two months onwards until harvest;
- spray Phhtonic Plus once in 2 weeks
So after 2 weeks compost and nutrimix
I just added dragon fruit skin shavings which is pink.
Cover to keep the smell in the vicinity to attract the insects as well as protect from the rains
@918310145449 I read a post where a gardener suggests using expired med tablets ( calcium/ folic acid/ vitamins) on plants to promote growth .
Would like to know your opinion.
Is that organic or chemical? There lies the answer.
Talking about expiry dates on medicines, there is an extensive 19yrs long research on the potency and toxicity of expired medicines and established that even after 15yrs from expiry date, the medicines were effective and medicines will not become toxic after expiry date (as it is they are!)
So, one may as well continue to take the medicines beyond that magic date!!
Disclaimer: It is my personal opinion and assume no liability whatsoever.
I will share the research link sometime.
What r the signa of Calcium deficiency in plants?
Calcium deficiency mainly affects Chilli, tomato and brinjal plants.
In chilli plant, it leads to curling of leaves and plant become brittle. Branches start breaking even with slightest force.
In tomato and brinjal the fruits will get damaged due to blossom end rot (bottom portion)
Same story with cucumber. Spreading but very few flowers and no fruits.
Manure the plants generously. Gourds are heavy feeders.
If they have insect damage, setup glue trap and pheromone trap.
Once gourds start flowering, for 7 to 10 days, they produce only male flowers to attract pollinators. In between, female flowers emerge to increase the chances of pollination.
Male flowers fall off after 1 day.
To increase flowering, nutrimix will help.
Typically, lilies are propagated from bulbs.
How to do tgat | |
They have seeds too | |
Bulbs are underground like garlic.
You plant one and over time they grow additional ones which can be seperated.
After the flowers dry up the bottom portion of the flower has a claver shaped pods with black flat seeds. But as KK says from bulbs it is propogation success rate is higher
I noticed wood powder in the container and also on the stem of the lemon plant.. typical of stem borer attack.
What steps do I take to manage this? Please guide
There is a Shiva temple near my house and all the milk and water outlet is done peepal tree with boundary . Since many days there is thick layer of milk which has turned black and smelling badly.. ....just want to know will it not affect the tree and if yes how can it be saved
It will affect the tree.
1) The outlet should be redirected away from the tree
2) Remove the thick black sludge and compost it. Out Bokashi bran will het it done. You can sprinkle the bran on the remaining slurry within the boundary for quick decomposition.
I also observed scaly insects on one of the branches.
Apart from soap spray, is there anything that can be done
That is the citrus stem borer.
You need to prune affected branches, split the pruned branch, and destroy individual larva to control its population.
You can spray neem directly in to the hole to kill the larvae
Your seeds of coriander and brinjals have sprouted within 4 days using your directions of pot soil mix. But I have not used bio fertilizer received today.
How to use it now on these pots.
Mix 2 tbsp of biofertilizers in 1lt water per pot and water the pots.
All my guavas are having a lot of such black spots and they have white worms inside when I cut
Sir can u pls guide how to fix this issue
You can also do bagging of individual fruit to avoid fruit flies damaging the gauvas.
Also there are lot of red ants on the tree and in the roots
Ant remedies have been discussed. Follow reccomendations.
unable to find it.can anyone forward it
1) Borax or Boric powder (carrom board powder acvailable in medical store)
Metarhizium anisopliae is a fungus that can be used as a biocontrol agent for effective control of; Weevils, Leaf hoppers, Plant hoppers, Leaf eating caterpillars, Borers, termites and ants.

Vegetable and fruit garden side
It is a wonder food | |
We make chutney with its peel
Even we too prepare chatny if the perl is tender
Guess with pestiside drenched non organic produce chutny from peels is not possible, where as from home grown organic manured fruits it is possible!
Wow! Tondekai is replaced by seeme badanekayi!!
Please can you share tips to start..
I bought sprouted seemebadanekai from shop and planted
Did you cut it, slice it and plant?
I have tried so many times. It just doesnt grow for me.
No the whole vegetable | |
I too tried many time this is the first time i got it
Oh, may be! I was thinking of lotus leaves!!
The bunch looks like it was purchased from veg/greens vendors. They sell big variety of Ondelaga
Yes, this was purchased from a vendor and shared to me by a cousin.. was thinking if we can grow them at our home too?
Like Palak, mint or other greens
I was just able to source a cutting from a fellow gardener in Bangalore
Will try my hands on this green
Ondelaga propagation by planting whole plant with proper roots.
If the growbags are stretched then transplant.
My suggestion is it put those on ground carefully, along with roots and soil. Plant spreads well and You will get more yield
Ondelaga or mandukaparni.excellent brain medicine and a sedative
On an average, one tree may yeald about 75 coconuts per year.
At an average price if 30/- per coconut, its total value is 2,250/-
If you harvest every two months, labour @ 600/-
600 x 6 = 3,600/- | |
If you harvest once in a quarter, then, 600x4 = 2,400/-
Additionally there is the cost of removing the outer shell.
It is actually a desired misery!
I am buying coconut for 20
I have also seen people spraying chemicals when coconut tree flowers. So I guess you cannot equate cost with yield in organic gardening
Where and what's the minimum quantity they ask and other details please
Minimum 10 kgs of Kopra. Once we got 6 litres oil from 12 kgs of kopra and the second time, 7 litres from 15 kgs.
Also, maybe I am not good at negotiating the rate. If you call someone, please tell me how much you paid@Manisha
Human labour especially with expertise of tree climbing is valuable. Even if we get just 10 coconuts ,it would work out to 60 rs. Per one. For an organic home grown coconut!!
Chennai is costlier than this. They dont come for less than 800 rs.which is the average per day labour charge here.. I would think it is a reasonable price..at 600.
You can take it to either basvangudi or ulsoor. Both have the conventional oil mills. I also buy the honge oil cake there
this seems to be the reason that everyone is giving up their coconut trees in Bangalore. It makes logical sense, but it would have been good if we could preserve more of them in our neighbourhoods. Another cause for the decreasing greenery in the city.
Every square inch is precious in terms of real estate and nobody wants to give up on that.
For outer shell removal there is a very simple mechanical device available just for Rs.300/- and will last you a life time. Even I can remove the outer shell within 5 minutes. Will share pic and video soon for those interested
Hibiscus flower and sanku pushpa flower tea too!
KK sir are you back? | |
Nice. Both I also have. Hibiscus I missed but was not aware of Sanku Pushpa . Will add next time. Thanks
Yes, we are back. | |
Parijata tea is heavenly!
Parijata leaf also helps in controlling blood sugar
Parijatha ,you mean the red stalked one ?
We have the same contraption!
I also have the same thing. It becomes little difficult once the coconuts dry
When green, it's definitely easy
Sharpen the piercer a bit it will be easier.
Which one is this | |
We have this in our house too
You can observe small seeds behind the leaves like nellikai
In covid period its powder is immunity booster
There are lot many small frogs in my soiled area how to remove them any idea
In the near future, it may become mandatory to grow your own food from your own compost to save your family from forcible ingestion of vaccine and other chemicals!!
That would be a great move indeed
It would be great if done voluntarily, like this group.
We have mooted this as a suggestion in TN govt organic farming policy . Atleast in communities with a certain number of dwelling units / space .
What do we do ? | |
These are moth caterpillars.
Neem spray will do. | |
I think 1 day the pot went dry.
Under water or overwatered
You need to manure the plants
Ok I will check | |
Good morning and happy Independence Day to all
This is for independence day
White. Milli bugs are all over brinjal seedlings.
Not enough sunlight and damp microclimate make it easy for pests to breed.
Super yield kk sir | |
Sir how long does it take for the potato plant to yield?
3 - 3.5 months | |
Harvested about 2.5 bunches of coriander only from one planter of 1.3 sqft.
I see so many carrots. Why do you say it's a failure?
Very small in size | |
Give a bath to them... They will be super tasty and beauties... So many
What was the depth of soil?
Maybe a little more | |
Carrots need more phosphorous. I had recommended about quite long ago and many times repeated since.
Not enough sunlight would grow lush and thick greens but stunted carrots.
Should the phosphorus be added in the initial stages it self?
Looks like. A clear image is always better than a video for investigation.
Or is it pumpkin plant ? | |
This is yellow cucumber. It can be hanging
Bagging helps to save from fruit fly damage. Asap.
this is the first time we got it .. so was not sure. Will bag it
Potato growing tips here
Should the flowers be snipped away for the potato to grow well
But, many suggest to actually dmip it away to focus energy on the tuber development.
Anways, flowers are of no use for us.
I read somewhere, that we should remove flowers in sweet potato for tuber development
Probably, we can try in this also
Yes, we should try. | |
Cut 1 or 2 healthy stem & pot it b4 transferring to ground.
It was from ground to ground. Now what can i do ?
It has obviously gone through transplantation stress. There's no need to worry. It will get back in 2 to 3 weeks. Just don't overdo anything.
This message gives me peace. Amen.
More than a month now....
It might not be properly unearthed for transplanting
it stayed in transit status for prolonged time withvriots exposed
Or it is over watered | |
All of the above! | |
Did all of it correctly I think... Will share the video...
Now check breaking the tip. If it is dead, it breaks easily or the rot oozes out. Wlse, there is hope
Ok. Will chk tmrw and tell ..
Then it will be the case " Operation successful but patient died!"
In 10 days twice like this how, should be some secret
Is this fruit or vegetable
Is it safe to consume ? | |
Are the white spots depisits that can be rubbed off or damage on the leaves?
No , cant be rubbed off | |
This batch took time to grow
This could be insect damage. Some kind of small beetle. Do you see any insect around?
Beetle fly away. So, on the leaves, you may not see them all the time. Many beetle varieties called weavils are active at night.
Do you see the leaves are physically damaged at those white spots, or the leaf surface smooth with only color changes? I can't make out the difference in the picture.
If there is physical etching kind of damage, then it is definitely insects, and the leaves are safe to consume.
If not, it could also be fungal infection.
I also faced this problem..
Open this, there might be a caterpillar hiding. Or they might have become adult moths and flown out to breed more!
I opened and saw I can't see any thing any where
They have finished their lunch!
When you observe daily and investigate on first occurrence, they can be caught.
Being green in colour, difficult to see. My lemon plant leaves same issue. They love thick leaves.
What did you do for this problem
This is the batchbthat had flowered, right?
I cut the flowers yday | |
After flowering, the leaves will start withering. Once all leaves yellow and dry up, stop watering for few days. They you can harvest. May be in about 4 weeks.
I can continue to water now?
If you can, add compost to it now. Tuber development will be very vigorous.
What this Saturday's topic ?
Where are we meeting? | |
Unfortunately, ladt couple of months, i had to be unavoidably out of station during last weekends.
This weekend too, we have the very important event "Oota Grom Your Thota" in Jayanagar.
Why not we do our monthly meetup at the event?
That is a super harvest | |
I guess they are on the ground
Sir, this Saturday at what time?

This os phosphorous deficiency
I guess I will have to give chemical phosphorus as emergency measure. Any idea how much I should give and at what frequency
I am sorry, we do not discuss chemicals here.
Rock phasphate has up to 20% water soluble phosphorous.
1) Prune all affected leaves & branches
2) Loosen the soil around the plant
3) Mix rock phosphate and biofertilizers (particularly PSB)
100:1 :: Rock Ph : PSB | |
25:1 :: Rock Ph : Biofertilizers
4) Sprinkle the mixture on the soil around the plant @30 - 50g per plant depending on the plant size
5) Water the plants deeply
While creating new beds, amend the soil at the rate per acre (43,560 sqft):
Rock Ph, 500kg (~ 12g / sqft)
PSB = Phisphorous Solubaluzing Bacteria
KK sir, how do I place order for items
Just message me with your list of items.
Fake news. Seeing it in a lot of forums. Those leaves are just at different stages of development of curry leaf plant.
Don't tho k so bcos, I have 2 varieties of these. @Kk can u pls confirm?
What is the source if this visual? That should be the validation of authenticity.
I can neither confirm nor reject since i do not know all varieties.
It's from another gaorganic gardening grp on FB
But, who created it and validated the claim?
In the absence of the source, it is just a forward and questionable. It may be correct, but there is no guarantee.
Sure sir. Thank you so much. Can you please send me the number to which I 've to message to u.
Thank you and you too! | |
Are you back in Bangalore?

How to manage ? | |
For some of the important nutrient supplements we have, I have prepared easily understandable infographics in this link. Currently covered:
More will be added. | |
My next online training is scheduled for 23 - 24 Sep 2023.
Will be announcing soon!
This new version will cover lot of new aspects of gardening i've learnt since the past version developed a couple of years ago.
Today's harvest from our garden
But it is green in colour
I too have this plant | |
Yes this is green only | |
Ave temp 15 to 2oc. | |
What veg & greens can b grown & fruits aprt from apple.
This looks to be zone 4 or 5 in the USA.
It is better to look for local resources on the internet to get more accurate recommendations.
Yes, ready to harvest. | |
Please refer to this advisory from horticulture dept.
Where is the cauliflower?
Under all of it sir!!! | |
That should have been on top, as it is an achievement in growing it in this fickle weather!
It's continuously raining here since over 3hrs!
It was such a heartening sight to see such a dedication put in to conserve every single leaf fallen, and every peel from the kitchen turned into great quality compost by earthworms.
Very inspiring KK sir | |
Ehich fruit is this | |
Super garden and nice yield
Cherry tomato yellow. They are still raw. Will turn yellow when ripe.
Aphids. Neem spray is enough if you do it properly.
You can additionally squish them by hand or frequently wash them off using just soap water. But they are additional work.
Ah ok. Thank you | |
Are these common? I also had them on my coriander and carrots
Anything to prevent these?
You cannot prevent them altogether all the time.
You can deter them to a great extent by growing the plants healthy;
- Privide them right amount of sun
- Manure adequately and regularly
- Water them as appropriate to the variety
- Add nutruent supplements at regular intervals
- Practive preventive pest control by regular sprays and other control measures available.
For details on the above topics, you may go through my gardening blogs here:
Very helpful. Thank you so much
I want to grow wheatgrass at home.
Can we grow it from normal wheat seeds or there are separate seeds for same?
Kindly guide where can I get good quality wheatgrass seeds online?
You can buy organic seeds from any organic grocery store and use it to grow wheatgrass.
Wheat from supermarket may not have good germination rate as they might be passed through steam chamber to increase shelf life. Or may be hybrid varieties with impotent seeds.
Organic native variety seeds are open pollinated and can by used.
Kapli or emmer wheat is one of the very popular open pollinated variety which you can look for in orhanic grocery store.
A blogpost to push you to the next kevel!
Thanks for writing and sharing.
Is this your terrace sir
Yes. But last year | |
KK do you have Jalapeno seeds or saplings?
Seeds available. Sapling, i will check and confirm.
Ok. Sapling is not available.
Hello, did Manoranjitam settle and bounce back?
Still it's a treat to the eyes
Hi , thanks for asking Vani. No signs of new leaves at all . Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping rains will do a miracle
Please share a few fotos if you have. It is a hardy plant and should revive
Thats a very positive word. Thanks . Hope it revives
Our 5 year old lemon tree started to show a few blooms this year.
Today, I observed wood powder dropped on ground.
I think it is stem borer .
How to manage and save this tree
Apart from pruning and neem application, is there anything else that can be done?
Did you try these two? | |
Not yet. Just noticed today. The tree is quite big. So its a challenge.
Inject neem oil solution in to the hole. That will kill the larva.
If the insect reaches the main stem, that can be fatal to the tree.
How to prepare Neem oil solution
You never used neem oil?
Seeked clarity to inject.
So, what's the waiting period to know that the tree is safe from this attack
Observe everyday. You'll know when further damage has stopped.
Is this the right time to plant it in ground ?
First of all, they are not getting enough sunlight. Move the container where they can get a lot of sunlight for a couple of weeks before transplant and manure.
Their stems are weak now.
I think so too...the bump is the caterpillar
Correction:This is lily moth Caterpillar ..not Monarch..
I didn't know there were so many verities
Awesome. Do u have seeds of this bunch?
Two years ago I observed it in my mango plant
Don't know creature ,sides & tail ends has tiny dry twig type structure.
This too is a variety of moth caterpillar
*AQUASAVE Planters and how they are set up for sowing*

Such beautiful colored marbles.
Any tips to ripen the passion fruits <This message was edited>
Once ripe, they will change colour. Just hold in hand. It should come in your hand with a gentle pull.
Share the pic of this plant
Would like to buy seeds/saplings
How much time does it take to ripen.
It's almost two months now just like dis
interested to see the container as well.
Will click when i visit the garden.
It is a cement rectangular pot.
2.5ft x 1ft x 9" depth | |
Have you adapted aquasave here also
In this pot we have layered cocochips 1" at the bottom
I have tons of volunteer pearl tomatoes. Will start yielding soon
An indepth investigation to identify the culprit
Mango season just ended, but the trees have already started fruiting for the upcoming season!!
Good morning..I need one sir..I'll come and pick up..
Can we still prune Mango plants. Mine is about 1.5 years old
There is second season they say for mangoes around sep,oct
Good morning , please keep one aside for me too.
3 more to go. | |
I also need. Tomorrow I will come and collect
Trying to figure out the green and red chilly variety suitable for stuffed pickling.
Please keep last one for me
All tomatoes? Salad tomato? Will be so good to make tomato curries too
Yup, salads and curries
@QL, sometime ago u had shared a video on pruning grapes.. did u follow the same technique? Or u just let it grow?
How long does it take the vine to start flowering?
I haven't done any pruning. The vines were left to themselves. They would have done much better with pruning i guess.
Ok, then I shall Prune my vines.
Mine r only 1 year old | |
Pruning grapevine is recommended in April.
Ok then I will wait | |

Pest Control DIY Concoctions
<1> 3GOS Spray Recipe: | |
1) Ingredients: 1 medium onion, 3 chillies, 3 cloves garlic, 1 inch ginger piece, 1 tbsp liquid soap, 4 Lt. Lukewarm water
2) Chop all veggies in to small pieces
3) Grind them in to paste
4) Add to warm water along with soap.
5) let it sit for 30 min. | |
6) Strain using a cloth and collect the decoction. Add filtered solids in to the compost bin
7) Fill the decoction in to the spray can
8) Spray a fine mist thoroughly on the plant on all sides, stem, underside of leaves, soil bed, wherever you suspect or see the pests hiding.
Repeat every 5 days for 2 - 3 times to eleminate the pests.
Caution: During preparation and application, do not rub your eyes, nose or other sensitive parts to stay away from trouble. While spraying, ensure you are spraying in the direction of the wind so that the mist does not fall on you.
Store the decoction in refrigerator for up to two weeks. Shake well before use.
Thank you very much sir. Will try
Very useful information sir
That's what I noticed and took that picture. What is the issue
Water clogging or fungal infection.
Why does your seed packets say treated with poison ? Is that because of the coating?
Yes. It is a coating meant to preserve the seeds against insects.
In order to avoid consuming the seeds orally, govt. regulation requires to mention this warning on the package.
Hope you are using natural polymers
We do not make seeds. Our seed suppliers use govt mandated coating. It is a chemical called Theram.
Not all seeds are coated.
I see - ok | |
I do the same as well | |
Any tips to preserve the oil
This is the first time for me
I dint add anything to it
How much coconut you give and how much was the yield
Mine, coconut was 10.5kg and got 5.5 ltr oil approx
About 40 to 45 coconuts. 3 to 3.5 lts i think.
I used to go to gandhi bazar
Why is it that only on brinjal seedlings and even plants get infected with white dust like flying insects. Tried soap water and neem oil spray. They come back soon.
If the plant does not have optomal growing conditions, iy becomes vulnerable to pests and diseases.
When you apply neem or any orhanic spray, you have to be aggressive and thorough.
Neem spray application schedule of day 1, 3, 7 and 14 is proven to be effective in controlling common pests infestation.
Do you tie each one with a net?
Chow chow is a super food!
what is the remedy for the infestation on my Lemon tree ?
This is happening everywhere
Inject neem oil undiluted in to all the holes using used syringe
The tree looks big. How old is it? Feels so bad to see so much of boring, that too to the central stem.
Please act fast to save this.
What could be the reason ?
It has gone up seeking sunlight. You can not trim at the bottom. And there is not much foliage on top.
Manure it and give more nitrogenous input like bokashi leachate, compost tea, or jivamruta so that it can grow some new branches and foliage.
Banana tree is growing well. Feed 2 to 3 tbsp of nutrimix to stimulate flowering and manure well.
The papaya tree has not hrown well. No point 8n keeping it. You may remove it.
How do you get to know it's raw banana
I got it from sir | |
Harvest of the Day | |
They will come to harvest in January. Leaves will turn yellow and wither.
However, fresh ginger can be harvested from September onwards for immediate consumption.
How old is it? Has it yielding any papaya already?
KK I am seeing some of my turmeric plant leaves are already turning yellow.. harvest?
The big one is 2 years old n did yield about 5 fruits, the smaller one is 1 year old n yet to fruit.
Check if the soil has become soggy. Else, dig a bit and confirm the tubers are firm and have turned completely yellow in color. After leaves have withered, stop watering and leave the tubers in the soil for 3 to 5 days before harvesting.
The bigger one is done. Not enough rootzone and nutrition.
For the smaller one, manure and nurture more frequently.
If the bigger one is flowering, feed manure generrously and see if it responds for 2 weeks.
Yes , no space for roots bigger one is in a shallow pot .. 18" deep
What is the recommended container depth for Papaya?
18 x 18 is good enough. | |
Any or a combination of the above.
I wish my turmeric plant flowers. @918310145449 kk how and when does it flower?
But there are different varieties. In crop variety, you hardly see blooms.
In my house - outdoor | |
Any ideas on what to do? | |
Oh, it's huge indeed! | |
And disturbing it can be dangerous. Better seek expert help.
Pest control companies use toxic chemical sprays but will eradicate it.
If the nest is not in your pathway, you could let it be. And be careful not to disturb the nest and expect wasps flying around.
During winter, the nest naturally dies down as new queens emerge and fly away to make new nests.
You need to take a call. | |
So beautiful. Thanks for sharing
So beautiful. A real treat
What is the cost | |
Do they also come with wheels?
The total project cost on the terrace and balcony is over 4L.
They don't have wheels | |
All chow chow FARMERS | |
Sir fir my Ridge gaurd there is a attack like above kindly suggest some remedy
These are aphids, and ants have started populating them under the leaves. Apply neem spray asap to control both.
Ok thanks i will it. For 1 litre water how much neem oil ?
5ml hand wash soap | |
Each stand how much | |
How we lifted garden stands on to the 3nd floor terrace.
Wow looks very nice | |
Heat stress causes leaves curling down inwards.
How much watering and Sun does curry plan require
I was told full Sun | |
Ours Cl plant after pruning.
It does not look like curry leaf
Our leaves are diff in shape
Yes. But when the soil goes dry repetedly and the sun is intense, plants can go into heat stress. To conserve body fluid, they reduce the exposed surface area by curling leaves downwards.
Try sour butter milk | |
I spray that also | |
Is it the regular green brinjal or long variety
It might as well be a viral infection. Is this plant getting enough sunlight?
Not much abt 2 hours max | |
If it's viral infection, remedy please? I have trimmed the plant completely multiple times, but it grows well n then again the same issue.
That is a possible reason.
For viral infection, pruning and manuring are the main remedy.
There are many varieties.
Is it a big tree? Where to buy these plants?
Is it in the ground | |
Purchased in Ramohalli karthik nursery
One from reddy nursery | |
What could be the reason
Too much sunlight here | |
Around 12 to 4 | |
I doubt. Check it out today.
Coriander requires 4 to 5 hrs of morning direct sunlight.
It is getting afternoon sunlight. Even then, the stem is very, very thin, indicating that it is getting not more than 2 hours of direct sunlight.
Also, note that reflected lighting from the sun does not count. Plants need direct sunlight falling on them for at least the specified duration to be able to synthesise food for their development.
Sir, which variety is this? Seeds/ samplings available?
I think Panchgavya is largely responsible for the fruit plant giving such huge and sweet fruits. Papaya Guava and lemon
We make the saplings | |
Wishing you and your family a happy vijaydashmi
A must-read news piece to step up your kitchen gardening.
Heavy metals are detected far exceeding their permissible limits in store bought viggues as per a recent research in which the researchers bought vegetables from many stores across bangalore and actually lab tested the amount of heavy metals present in them.
It is also a loud call NOT to use STP water for growing food in apartments and closed communities as they can be a major source of heavy metals.
Quite curious, how does STP water get heavy metal? Any references?
Thanks to KK sir. U have been helping me grow vegetables on my rooftop. Even though I m able to grow few of them in my limited space, yet safe. I shall continue to seek ur help and guidance to grow more in my
led leaves and kill the caterpillar inside.
Spray neem oil on the underside of leaves thoroughly following the 1, 3, 7, 14 day schedule
Sir which is a good time to plant winter vegetables?
End of october onwards | |
The rain this season is extreme! Any harvest is a bonus!!
My sweet potato harvest
- fruit fly damage - Check if there are larvae inside the fruit - pheromone trap
- Fungal infection - fungicide
- over watering - check if soil is soggy - allow for proper drainage.
They are most likely mexican bean bug or spotted bug that eat away the plant foliage.
Oh, this is a soil pest. Damages root tissues.
Sprinkling diatamaceous earth powder can control.
Eggs of the stink bug. Future pests of your garden!
Hello Krishna Kumar ..please suggest a remedy for the above, enquiry from one of my friends. Also she wants to know why this is happening..Thankyou

Rhizopus rot - a fungal infection.
Remove all rotten jackfruits.
Spray mycodim on the affected trunk/branch and on the fruit that has only superficial infection.
Repeat 3-4 times at a gap of 5 days.
Important: it is likely that there is water stagnating in the ground due to rains. This will make the tree vulnerable to such infections. This has to be investigated and suitable measures to be implemented to drain off stagnating water downstream.
It is possible that waterlogging is below earth and not visible at the surface at first glance. This makes it more challenging to remedy the situation. It only means wrong placement of jackfruit tree.
Is this a good period to report plants or should I wait for another month?
Typically, November. But this time, it is still wet and cloudy.
Once, the sunny days resume, and it's good to go.
Something is eating up my pudina
You have to trace it to know what it is.
Please tell us more about sweet potato growing
yes please. And are these in Containers?
This is in a large concrete planter built into the terrace.
How do u maintain after this?
It doesn't require much attention.
- Prepare soil before planting (our regular potting mix)
- Chose a sunny place, at least 6 hrs.
- Plant cuttings, 3 inches deep, 9 inches apart
- After flowering, the leaves and stems turn yellow and wither
- stop watering for about a week before harvest
- in about 3.5 months from planting, it is ready to harvest
From our garden in the nursery.
@918310145449 can you please tell me how to revive a guava tree? with nutrients
This is due to a fungal infection.
Could be Mg or Zn deficiency
Add epsom salt for Mg | |
Add vermicompost for Zn
In both cases, remove affected leaves for the plant to recover fastee
Cocopeat is not a suitable mulching mateial. The stem will tend to rot or become vulnerable to fungal infections.
Cocopeat in the basin and far away from stem. Can it still rot?
Sounds like passion fruit
The other one with wrinkles
That also is a slightly dehydrated passion fruit
@918310145449 what is the approx timeline for sweet potato from flower to harvest?
So healthy. It looks like a climber
What's this 1 month for?
Answer to a question in the message thread.
Kk idu namma maneyadu | |
But lots of flowers are coming
Can we reuse this | |
Good to add in the earth | |
Hello, I found some very healthy red wriggler composting worms and want to try my hand at vermicomposting(I do aerobic and bokashi). Any tips on where to begin. Every time I have harvested l worms, they either die or get eaten by lizards.
It is important to understand why they are dying before attempting again.
To avoid lizards, use a bin that has smaller air vent holes and a lid that has no gaps.
Lizards aew taken care of. They died due to lack of food and dryness I would presume..
Would like to know what they feed on. I believe they cannot thrive on kitchen waste that's strong like onions peels etc
That you have to take care of.
Any other inputs on how to start and manage a worms bin. Dos and don't s.
But, what is yeast doing? That is the question.
But I didnt relate to that
And the outcome is... | |
Something similar to Compost Tea or Culture
I would use waste material to make those, not the harvest! Keep guessing...
I get musambi peel from roadside juicewala and make bio enzyme
One thing is clear, 40+ members in the group who have seen my video, do not make this at home!!
Yes, i do too. | |
bio enzyme? yeast to speed up the process?
Is it the site next to ur house
It is one of our clients' gardens in their empty plot @Vakil Garden city.
Looks like u r collecting the aroma in process of making an essential oil?
That requires steaming/distillation involving heat.
Here, heat is a big no-no!
Hmm. Saw bubbles in the pipe
Uhoh zoomed to check it is a router. My bad!
You are growing microbes?
Actually many possibilities are emerging!
If it's none of the above, what else??
Is it bi-product of process? Methane or something
No chance of pickle i think.. but definitely wine..right KK sir
The outerskin is not peeled off?
What's the gadget on top side
It is the bubler. Used to release the CO2 from the jar to avoid pressure build-up still isolating the brew from the atmosphere.
The CO2 passes through clean water in the bubler. Water keeps the brew isolated.
Keep changing the water from time to time.
It also has star fruits from @919900244665 farm!
yes...even I didn't know such a thing existed!
Any fruit sour/sweet can become wine
We do gooseberry wine but no air movement things and all ....
It is not mandatory but makes beewing very easy. No monitoring is required.
A note on this pl and where did you procure the bubbler. I am thinking of trying this out
How long does it take to brew?
About 3 weeks. We need to wait until CO2 production stops.
If you grind the fruits and use the juice as the starter, it can be ready in 7 days.
Wow.! Would be interesting to see the final outcome. Do you just filter it and store or are there any more process?
Decant clear liquid and bottle it. The longer you store, the better it gets.
We too have plenty. | |
Please share the process.
Does wining preserve the vitamin content?
*Basic Steps to brewing*
At the minimum, these are the steps to fermentstion.
- Thoroughly sterilize all utensils and containers used.
1kg Star goosebery - cleaned and dried
A sterilized container to hold all these up to its neck
Bubler - i strongly recommend as it makes the process a lot easier and safe
- Add the fruits in the container and fill with 3 lt water
- dissolve sugar in remaining water, boil and bring back room temperature
- mix sugar syrup in the container
- Add wine yeast into the container
- close the lid with bubler
- thoroughly mix by shaking the container
- label it with start date
- keep in a dark, cool and dry place
- keep shaking the container once daily
- yo will observe co2 escaping from the bubler (like in my video)
- in about a week, fermented drink (call it fizz) is ready to consume by filtering properly
- leave for another 2 weeks for a more stable drink.
- then filter and bottle
- ensure sterile hands and utensils through out. It can otherwise spoil easily.
This is as simple as it can get. But not really the best process on wine making.
It is more of an art than technique.
In this article, the elaborate process is well explained with science behind every step of the way!
Kindly tell what should be the next steps in this to ensure these flowers turn to fruits. Thanks
I have a blooming marigold plant nearby
Count on the bees!! | |
Hand pollination not feasible.
Manure the tree if necessary
Do not over water | |
Most likely Mg deficiency. Add epsom salt
Sir could you make one video plz
Next time, when i make a new brew, i will make step by step video.
Can we do it with passion fruit
Is wine yeast different from yeast?
Can you please share the link for bio enzyme uses sir
Request from one of our group members to consider this possibility earnestly.
6Th gen seeds ! | |
Traditional way of collecting seeds
I had similar problem last year primarily due to heavy rain
Remove all affected leaves and vines and burn.
Then, neem spray 1,3,7,14th day
Best wishes. Waiting to see the final view.
Will indeed share the progress here.
My bananas in plant (raw) and even after plucking also splitting anybody can reason it and need remedy also
*Bananas can split for a number of reasons, including:*
During ripening, the pulp's osmolarity increases as starch is hydrolyzed, which can cause the peel to shrink and strain internally.
Bananas can split if exposed to temperatures above 21C, which can happen during ripening, delivery, or storage.
Bananas can split if exposed to relative humidity above 90%. This can happen in production areas where bananas are left on the plant until they are ripe.
Bananas that are fully mature-green (round in cross section) are more likely to split.
If bananas are processed at higher temperatures, the fruit can ripen faster, weakening the skin and causing splitting.
It is most likely a combination of more than one reason cited above causing the split. I am afraid not much can be done to avoid it as the weather is as such.
Instead of letting it ripen on the plant, you can harvest when raw and let it ripen on the shelf under more stable conditions. This may help avoid more bananas from splitting.
Main content from AI, moderated and consolidated by me.
I should say, I am helping her with technical know-how. She is the one setting up the whole garden.
I mainly do the contol system.
She is now showing how to do the drip connections. <This message was edited>
Almost done! Final version by end of today.
KK sir one of my neighbour s wants to install drip irrigation system. When are you free
Looks beautiful, what is the table fan for? anything to do with garden set up?
are the birds real? | |
That is to keep me cool in summer, like weather here!
Very professionally done. Looks very spacious and neat
Is it all on elevated platforms? What is the black mat sort of a thing below the plant pots?
Sir do you have seedlings available ?
They not, but already, parrots came and investigated the place!
Yes, they already had a platform. We placed draincell mats to get the desired minimum height for AQUASAVE.
Draincell mats? What is it?
KK sir, this is marvelous. I just feel like sitting there. Which place is this. Lovely soil and set up
This too in Guntur. | |
No. They already had cabbages and brinjals planted. We transplanted them to our beds.
Returned back to blore yday night after completing the two projects to our hearts content!
Sir do you hsve some vegetable seedlings?
This must be your place | |
Sir can I visit you this coming week
Sure, check with us about our availability on the date when you would like to visit
Two beds ready yday. | |
This is going to be an experimental setup to try out my model for commercial urban farming.
We are able to work on this project only on wednesdays as my gardener is available only that day.
5-6 inches above ground
3-4 inches loosed soil underground
About 9" of cultivated soil
Since my soil is mostly clay I am thinking of 1 ft cultivable soil raised bed
That will be a loads of soil mixed with manure to add.
You should loosen the earth for 3-4 inches depth and top up with 8-9 inches of soil mix. Though clayey, it will mix with the topped up soil and tilth improves.
have you decided on a brand name?!!
It is not a product! | |
"Quantum High" could be a possibility if it were to be a product.
Nutrition feed made simple through our fertigation system.
KK what is the volume of the blue containers for gardening. Which look like a crate
You mean the tree planters?
The one in your last video of today. Feeding JA
If only the only bottle, innany glassware shop.
If you want the wine brewing kit, then on Amazon. I can share the link to the lit i bought.
That is a severe infestation of garden centepede. It is a pest and eats root tissues.
You need to take these pots away from the garden and dunk it in a bucket of neem oil solution.
Hi KK how much time should Metarizzium be left in the compost for it to mix well?
Same question for bio fertilizer also
Both of them are to be directly applied in the soil around plants. They do not participate in the composting process.
Two more patches yet to harvest.
Used in cooking instead of potato.
What is the remedy for rust in grapes and scales in limes?
Also, I had 10 bunches of grapes eaten up by birds n squirrels. How to protect the fruits? Not feasible to bad each bunch
TIA <This message was edited>
Leaf rust is a fungal disease.
Remove infected leaves and dispose off (if burning is not possible).
Spray Mycodim 3-4 times in 5 days interval. <This message was edited>
What other plants get affected by rust?
For squirrels and birds, physical protection is the main solution and bagging is the easiest of all. Review once again if you can manage bagging the fruits, even though a bit inconvenient.
You could also search in amazon if there are any ultrasonic devices that drives them away. I am trying one in my factory to avoid rodents and squirrels from entering in but no luck. Now, I am fixing SS mosquite mesh for all windows. <This message was edited>
It mainly affects grapevine and another tree not native to India. <This message was edited>
@918310145449 could you please share the handbook again? I changed my phone and lost all the data unfortunately

Sir which vegetables do we plant in dec/jan?
I need to spray ne3m oil but there is lot of dew on the leaves. Would it be ok to spray or evening would be better ?
Spraying on the dew is ok. Evening after 5 pm, too, is ok.
Almost a bucket full of sweet purple potato harvest from 9 sqft. Average about a kg per sqft.
Experiential learning of how important sunlight is.
Two concrete beds of similar area and depth.
One is exposed to direct sunlight and the other under the tree.
Sweet potato planted in both places at the same time, 3.5 months ago.
Direct sunlight yield is about 8.5kg
Under the tree is about 1 kg!! <This message was edited>
What is the height of the concrete bed KK
Soil depth is 22" | |
Very true. Sunlight is absolutely required
As the year 2024 passes by, a fresh beginning to the new year 2025 awaits!!
As a new year gift, I present to you this generic calendar with nutrition and pest mgmt schedule for the whole year.
This is the first version. As it gets refined/corrected/updated, i will share the new version from time to time.
Wishing you all a happy, prosperous and health new year 2025!!
There couldn't have been a better way to begin any day any year!
Thankyou KK. And Happy year of sustainability to all!
Happy new year everybody
Happy new year everyone
Happy New Year to everyone. This is a wonderful new year gift KK.
Happy New year 2025 to all
These are Colocasia tubers, right?
Harvested a bit early. Just want to try if we can get it throughout the year
Maybe not, bcos some have turned green and are ready to sprout again. Their growth is similar to potato
Oh ok. Yet transplanted a few to check it's growth for next 3 months
Seva Utsava 2025_Final_print.pdf 4 pages document omitted
Check for waterlogging in the soil, which is typical in growbags.
- Rootknot nematodes - Knots formed in the roots
The first one can be investigated by digging soil to expose roots to check if any nodules have formed. The other two are invisible.
Undotunately, all of the above causes show up only at the final stage of plant root damage and, most often, fatal. There is no remedy to any of them once it has occurred.
Oh no! Let me check | |
I have the Japanese Fusarium wilt issue with my Banana plants. ICAR has done work on this and I have had very good satisfaction level with the product made with Trichoderma Reesei. Of course fusarium wilt for other crops would have other possible remedies.
May be speak with ICAR or even with the Haseeraghatta institute
Please elaborate on your experience
1) What is this Japanese fusarium wilt, and how could you identify it?
2) Application of Trichoderma R
3) How did the plant respond? Which plant was that?
It is called Japanese mosaic virus/fusarium wilt. My Banana plants started developing partly yellow leaves and I spoke with a local horticulture specialist who identified the disese. I was told that I have to destroy the plants
Upon researching I came across this ICAR paper that said that TR had shown great result in the banana plants and they had licensed to technology to a Belgaum based company
I have applied the same and I am quite satisfied with the results in about 75% of the plants
It didn't work with 2 of the plants
I will find the bottle and send a picture of the same tomorrow
Thanks Kk and Sunil | |
Mosaic virus and fusarium wilt are different diseases caused by different pathogens with different symptoms, but both are fatal.
That is very good news. There is nothing more valuable than sharing first-hand experience here in this forum.
I think you could, anyway, procure this and apply to increase the chances of reviving the plant.
However, first investigate about waterlogging.
At the OFYT starting tomorrow, training programs on interesting and very useful topics have been organized conducted by experts. About two brochures have links to register for training on growing orchids and soap making.
Thanks KK registered for grafting workshop
Lots of turmeric...enough for the year..
this is a great reaping...
Looks fresh and lovely | |
Envious bunch of green enjoy
Have question related to Neem oil spray. The spray bottle keeps getting clogged. Any solution to this?
Also can we make the neem +dishwash solution and store it ? Will it stay stable
*Tips for keeping spray can and nozzle clean*
- While filling the spray can with spray solution, ensure there are no particles. Filter if needed.
- After spraying, do not leave any residual solution in the can. Empty it and clean the can with fresh water ready for next use. This avoids any precipitation and scaling in the can.
- Periodically, unscrew the nozzle and clean the nozzle tip to remove any solids buildup in the nozzle hole. Spray with clean water to remove any solids in the nozzle passage.
- Store the spray can protected from sunlight when not in use to increase its durability and functionality.
Yes.Quatum leaf has this mixture available as Neem oil premix
New issue with my banana plants...The centre New sprouting leaf has been eaten off and killed...What is this? And how can I deal with this?
Hello Krishna Kumar, enquiry from my friend. Please suggest a solution to this. Thankyou
Monkeys do that. Check if they passed by your farm recently.
No it's not monkeys. I could see the leaves eaten by pests..
If it is the job of a pest, they should be able to find it around the plant. If they can trace the pest and share a picture of it, a suitable remedy can be recommended.
That's normal. 4 is nothing!
Jeevamrut for the garden soil. The process is jeevamrut for the soul.
With a heavy heart, i have to inform you that one of our fellow gardeners and group members, Malathi Karpur, passed away on this 19th.
My association with her dates back to 1994 when i was working at addon, which was her husband Dilip's company.
While gardening, she would actually become a child wondering and keen about every minute details about the plants and the soil.
She used to post in the group, but very infrequently, some of you might recollect.
Sorry to hear. May her soul rest in peace! Om Shanti
Yes, I remember her posts. very sad to hear..
May god take care of her soul and the grieving family and friends.
Sorry to hear. May her soul rest in peace
Very sorry to hear the news. Yes, she used to post in the group quite frequently.... Prayers to the family and the departed soul.
Sorry to hear that ! | |
I too visited her house | |
Let soul rest in peace | |
Sorry to hear. Om shanti
Very sad to hear let god sadgathi to her
I'm seeing this message so late.
Interactions with Malathi aunty is one of the many incredible things that gardening has blessed me with.
*OTG Sugarcane growing tips*
- Prefer growbag over any rigid container like plastic, FRP, earthen or cement. Reason: as new shoots emerge from the soil, the clump under the soil grows bigger and stretches towards the container wall thereby make them bulge/deform/crack depending on the material used. Growbag is flexible to bulge and get back to shape after harvest.
- Min. Depth: 18" | |
- Diameter: 18" and above
- Sowing period: Dec - Feb depending on the region
- Sowing depth: 10-12" | |
- Seed: cut mature sugarcane in between the nodes. One to two nodes per cutting can be used.
- Seed preparation: Was the cutting and dip in trichoderma solution or jivamruta. Do not soak. Dip and take it out. Shade dry just the surface for 20 min. before planting
- Potting mix: Quantum Leaf standard. Mix in one or two handsful of wood ash in to the potting mix.
- Plant the seed prepared horizontally about 10" deep
- Sun: 8hrs min. | |
- Water well, keep the soil moist but not soggy
- Feed compost once in two months
- Feed Phytonic plus every month
- All typical pests can attach sugarcane. Sasyarakshak spray once in two weeks
- Apply the newly discovered biopesticide (discussed earlier here) to avoid rootknot nematode
- Ready to harvest by next sankranti!!
Sow | Grow | Harvest | |
Amazing details. Thankyou very much
Lot of typo errors. Will revise sometime.
Aren't you supposed to prune every year
Yeah, but timing is important. It's done typically around this time, after harvest. But i relocated it in Nov.
so good to see this | |
is it still safe and usable ?
White mould is good fungus. No issues.
Is this weather winter or spring? Wondering if plants get confused with this as well
Tropics do not have a clearly demarked spring. A brief transition between winter and summer, typically by the end of february - big march when many trees shted their leaves signifies spring.
Thank KK. So we are in winter right now and not a good idea to transplant?
Depends on which plant | |
Fruit plants like guava mango mulberry
Gauva and mulberry, you can. Do it asap.
How can we use black turmeric?
*Pest and disease spray routine FAQ*
Q1: Wanted to confirm if we should apply sasya rakshak and neem oil weekly? If so, how many days gap between them?
Weekly application is recommended as a preventive care. You could also do it once in two weeks when you know the garden is robust and pests are infrequent.
In my garden, i do not do preventive care at all. I practice early detection and control since there have been hardly any pests across seasons for the past couple of years now.
As of now, my terrace garden is mainly fruit trees. When i grow more veggies, that scenario might change.
Apply Sasyarakshak to those veggies of which leaves are edible. following is a list
- Greens - ideally, no spray to be applied. Just in case.
- any other vegetables whose leaves you may know are edible
For other veggies, apply neem spray.
- Prune infested leaves/branches and burn them. If burning is not possible, soak them in a bucket of spap water for a whole to drown the insects.
- Spray mycodim on 1, 3, 7, and 14th day.
In the case of Mycodim, apply preventive spray once a month, at least on those types of plants in your experience, and had frequent fungal infections in the past.
Q2: On which plants neem oil and sasyarakshak should not be applied at all?
On those plants which are not at all affected by pests!!
Grow | Eat | Glow <This message was edited>

will try and do | |
Is it variety of sweet potato?
KK sir, can we grow pepper plant from the black pepper
Technically yes. But store bought seeds may not be mature yet when they were harvested and hence not potent.
Usually it is grown from plant cutting.
What is this? Please explain
Oh ok. Actually I have preserved the one pepper pod u had given me long back. So I just want to try
I made it slices for cooking
Red and green amaranthus, palak, coriander, methi lookalike weed but can be consumed. Some grass can be seen too
Seems to have coriander, chillis too.
Yeah, there are 5 capsicum plants. No brinjal.
seeds to have been more densely sown? so the saplings support each other?
Whatever in between plant planned for this area didnot come up here
Looks like Too much space left out free here.u usually don't do that
- Both rows have been sowed at the same time.
- The spacing is correct
- Seeds are from the same packet
- Sowing in both rows is equally dense
What is your ovservation?
Top tip: Think about resources <This message was edited>
Inadequate Ventilation, Sunlight and maybe space !!
Yes, i can not emphasize enough about the importance of sunlight!!
The sparsely grown row is just 6" away from the well grown row, but the contrast is striking!!
It is getting shadowed by the adjacent wall and its productivity went down drastically.
However, in another week, the scenario may be different. As those plants grow taller than the wall, they get sunlight on par with the adjacent row and pick up their phase!!
You may recollect my earlier post on sweet potato havest. <This message was edited>
This has deep lessons for life too , to be a Duck or Eagle!
Absolutely true. Sunlight has a lot of impact on plants
I will wait for the answer!
Looks like there is good sunlight but on one side may be it will sprout little late
This learning us not about sunlight
Are the seeds thinly spread or late sowing, because this side it is more grown than the other side
- Both rows have been sowed at the same time.
- The spacing is correct
- Seeds are from the same packet
- Sowing in both rows is equally dense
But with your jeevaamrutha, any seed will sprout
Unfortunately, i did not have Jv while sowing
Oh ok. Since the soil mix is also uniform, what else could be the reason for thin sprouting
It takes exactly 9 days to sprout
I, too, am intrigued. | |
was one side split seeds and other side whole seeds?
I take back this! | |
Question on chilli plant. Was the plant not fruiting at this time?
My chilly plants are fruiting. Should I still prune them?
These had completed their fruiting cycle, and pruning was pending for some time.
Do not prune while flowering or fruiting.
What is going wrong with this guava plant?
Watering is adequate . Not more or less. Could it be due to fungal problem?
Possible. Not more can be inferred from the picture presented. <This message was edited>

Sir my capsicum plant leaves are kind of curling up.and capsicum are falling off. What do i do?
Todays harvest lemon and potato
@918310145449 i noticed the leaves turning black like this in tomato plants, what could be the reason?
Early blight fungal infection.
Mix a table spoon of baking soda to neem and soap solution per lt. and spray after pruning severely affected leaves
Is baking soda and cooking soda ( ie. aduge soda) one and the same
- biofertilizers, 1 tsp per kg
Soil depth: 1 - 1.5" | |
Tray size: any available
- Fill the soil mix in the tray upto 1"
- spread the sprouts on the soil mix evenly such that soil is not visible
- cover the sptouts with more soil mix just enough to cover the sprouts.
- sprinkle water just to keep the soil moist
- ensure the trat gets 2-3 hrs sunlight min.
- sprinkle water regularly to keep the soil moist but never soggy.
- Once the seedlings are about 3" tall, they are ready to harvest.
Thank you sir for this detailed message. Will work on it
From where to get organic seeds for microgreens
Foliar growth has already started. I suggest trim 2 ft. from the top and let it grow. In the next cycle, plan to trim to your desired height before it starts producing new foliage.
Mine are doing very badly
- Avoid afternoon sun. | |
- Stake if necessary | |
- manure and nutrimix | |
- phytonic plus, flowering onwards <This message was edited>
Tomato grows fine until flowering and problems start after that
Multiple types of sap sucking pests are in your the garden.
Remove all infected leaves and then apply neem spray
So nice. Is this your nursery plot
This is the client's garden at Vakil Garden City.
Sir, Will it help to neem spray every 2 wks ?
Intially, you need to follow 1,3,7,14 day schedule to get rid of them. Then once in two weeks. Weekly better.
It cleared the aphids | |
That is the larva of ladybug
Hi, I wonder how could you clear the aphids ?
Ladybug larvae are one of the good bugs
You can see the larva in this picture
That's lady bug varve | |
The lady bug will lay the eggs when aphids are good in nos. The plant will suffer a bit but worth the pain
In allowing the aphids population this is what I have observed
Can I still spray neem spray for spider mite control?
No. That will kill the ladybug as well.
I meant how to identify ladbug in the garden, to nurture it and take it to the plants that have aphid
You can google ladbug image and compare
They are very fragile ...I tried once and it got squished with a slight touch...also they like to find food on their own
Is this good insect for plant?
Only ladybug is a beneficiary bug. There are hundreds of other insects looking similar to ladybugs with different designs, which are actually pests. Their larvae look very similar. So, don't just blindly think all are good.
Observe the larvae activity for a few minutes, and then you will know if they are hunting other insects or munching leaves.
Go through this page to compare with the insect in your garden to decide
This is a pest, eats away the leaves n ravages the garden <This message was edited>
Behind nuggae leaves these creatures appears what to do?
Aphids. Soak in salt water for 20 min. and wash the leaves. Then you can use.
Sir, shall I spray 1% salt to the plant.
I don't know about that.
If you have heard about it from someone else, please try and let us know if it worked so that everyone can benefit.
I can't see the plant. I see fungal spots on gauva
Very healthy plant suddenly started drying up. Shed all its leaves and yhe guavas stopped growing
Shredding leaves are possible due to spring onset
Aren't they butter fruits
How do you know it is ripe. Is it by colour or softness
With a gentle press, you will know if it has become soft.
Do you see new shoots emerging from the branches here abd there?
Remove those fruits from the plant.
I will chk sir. Is it ok to allow the other plants to grow in the drum?
Small, shall rooted plants are ok.
Plant beans variety in the drum.
Are sweet potato leaves edible?
Saw a recipe for patrode, so wanted to know
If there is a recipe, it should be edible! I have never tried. Let us know how it was.
Any tips on how to use coffee grounds (after brewing filter coffee) to plants? It is acidic in nature so can it be used for all plants?
I and @918861001308 are on a month long training camp on sustainable construction at this place, learning how to build mud house. <This message was edited>
Enjoy and have a successful Training
Amazing where is this event happening in HP
I can already visualize one such home coming up in your farmland ! Wishing the best !
Since 4 days, no electricity here. Rains and intemittent snow. Temperature in the range of -3 C
Phones were all dead. Just yday night moved into another location at higher elevation where there was power.
It's altogether a different life here!
Was there a month back , heavy snow and rain for two days, a very different experience
Actually, you have lucky. Throughout this winter it had snowed only a couple of days, it seems.
Snowing now in March was not usual and not expected at all. Particularly at the place we are now.
Thank you. We are safe here and well taken care of by the organizers. But, typing with fingers at -6 C is very hard!!
Wishing you a nurturing experience and safe stay and travels
Very few get this experience.
Soon . v r abt 50 SSs going to Srinagar
Now we can imagine our soldiers who spend much of their life time in such places
Thats true! Hope your work gets done despite the unusual weather conditions
We reached higher elevation now. Program started from yday.
All the best KK | |
No power and battery fully down. Next post after power resumes.
Yes.i am so jealous of this place. The soil is ultra fertile!!
This was the most precious addition to all the crops when my father was a cultivator... So happy to see it now
you are lucky indeed! | |
Try giving it a nice gentle cleaning with water spray... not too forceful, otherwise the bud may fall
Let me try that <This message was edited>
Is it red ants namratha?
Will go check shortly. | |
Soap water is better to get rid of stickness.
Thank you. It is amazing to eat rice with Chutney pudi and mosaranna with Pickle here!!
True @918310145449 it is a wonderful opportunity.. which happens due to your passion.. Best Wishes
Some of my tomatoes were also hith late flight. Reason are either irregular watering or calcium deficiency
Watering schedule is on point. Two times a day because of summer. Could it be excess watering also?
How do we fix calcium deficiency?
just wow! Thanks for sharing
Hopefully in 4 to 6 weeks. Considering the hotter climate now, it may be vulnerable to pests like aphids and caterpillars.
Apply preventive sasyarakshak spray once a week.
KK sir , are you here. I wanted to buy |
